I think Simon has never known what he is talking about. He also supported Gareth over Will in Pop Idol..... he really is just useless.

He says things for a reaction and he's far from useless. His bank balance certainly won't be useless and I like the bloke. He is honest, arrogant, fair and sometimes just funny with his one liners. He made the show I just wish he'd gain some credibility back and get rid of Cheryl. I hope he realises that she's been a disaster this series.

I say it all the time but Simon Cowell is a celebrity, a showman, an entertainer. He knows as much about music as the rest of us IMO.

He also offered a deal to Busted but they went to Universal. In the late nineties, he turned down Mika saying he could sing but his songwriting wasn't strong enough at the time (whether or not it was, I suppose we don't know).

His biggest miss was Take That because he felt Gary Barlow was too fat.


He gets it right often enough to have been able to build his reputation.

And given his bank balance, he clearly gets it right often enough in his work. He's no musical genius, he doesn't have a clue what the latest hot indie band is. But he does manage to predict public tastes and deliver a product that they want to buy.

Would it be fair to judge someone's singing when they have a sore throat like that? Sounds pretty unfair to me. Exceptions exist to every rule.

That's actually Simon down to a tee. He really doesn't have much of a clue, but occasionally he gets lucky. Leona was one of those occurences.

I wouldn't go as far as saying Simon is useless - I think he is a shrewd businessman. But I don't think he knows nearly as much about music as he'd have us believe.

His success in the industry is a prime example of the "10% talent/90% luck" rule. He got stupidly lucky and made a fortune. Now he can afford to waste money picking through the chaff he supports, for the odd time he manages to find himself a pearl.

BTW, I'm not knocking him. I wish I could have half the luck he has.
