He says he missed out on the Spice Girls, not that he turned them down. Victoria Beckham said he did. Whether or not she would actually have known, I'm not sure. The rumour had been going around for years and she may just have repeated that. Maybe Simon Fuller will clarify one day.

He also offered a deal to Busted but they went to Universal. In the late nineties, he turned down Mika saying he could sing but his songwriting wasn't strong enough at the time (whether or not it was, I suppose we don't know).
His biggest miss was Take That because he felt Gary Barlow was too fat.

He gets it right often enough to have been able to build his reputation.
And given his bank balance, he clearly gets it right often enough in his work. He's no musical genius, he doesn't have a clue what the latest hot indie band is. But he does manage to predict public tastes and deliver a product that they want to buy.
