Humax Foxsat+ HDR with Seagate External HDD
Trickle
03-11-2009
Hi,

I want to use the USB port of my Foxsat+ box to back up some of my programmes to an external HDD. I am looking to buy a Seagate 1TB HDD http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-Expa...d=6NLPF1KFX1PW

The plan to create two partitions (a) FAT32 for backing up files on my Windows PC and (b) EXT3 for backing up files from my Humax box.

Has anyone else tried using this configuration with this particular hard drive? I cannot see why it shouldn't work but the technical data that I have seen so far indicates that the Seagate HDD supports Windows and Mac OSX but there is no mention of Linux (which is what the Humax machine is using).

Note: Please don't tell me to replace the original hard drive in my Humax box because I don't want to do that for various reasons.

A HDD does not care what the OS is provided the OS can read and write to the format. You can format the entire drive EXT3 and use this driver to read and write to it under windows

I decided to buy the Seagate 1TB external HDD. I have a Windows PC and a Linux laptop. I used the Linux machine to reformat the HDD in ext3 format using the commands:
umount /dev/sdc1
mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdc1
I then make sure that all the folders are read/write for everyone using chmod.
When I plug the HDD into the usb port on my HUMAX Foxsat I get the error "Cannot read USB device .... and saying that it must be in ext3 or fat32, etc.

I can use the HDD fine on my Linux laptop and when I use the mount command it says that it is in ext3 format. I can also use the HDD fine on my Windows XP machine using Ext2Fsd.
So the question is why can't the Humax box recognise the HDD?

I also have a usb 4Gb memory stick in FAT32 format that work OK with the PVR. I reformatted that to be EXT3 as well and now the memory stick cannot be read either.

Read the bit here about setting the partition type
