I think that's the problem really. They talk about the singing, but so often, it's said that they are looking for a contestant with the x factor, especially during the auditions. So this enlarges what it is they are wanting.
But that tells me that each of the 12 finalists have been percieved by the judges to have the xfactor in some shape or form as well as some singing ability, they've seen something in them that they think they can do something with.
I think the defination of 'x factor', could be more on the perception of the person watching the act rather than a set list of criteria. What would Simon be saying about them if he had got the groups?
Simon always calls it a singing competition, which for him I suppose is his personal main aim, but on a whole, I don't think the show would be popular if it was just about that and super serious with it. He's had to encompass more than just the singing, and so the xfactor part of it, and the entertainment part of it is all added in with it to make it a popular show. So I'd say it's a competition for singers.
