Beta testing to start:

Looks like the software update might actually happen, once the beta testing is out of the way.. Lets hope its not a 5 year Beta program like google love so much..

If deployment of Beta is not till the end of this month it sounds like the real thing won't be with us till 2010!

720p would be great if you have the internet connection to stream it.Even on a 3.5mb connection bbc iplayer freezes at times on my PS3.

With the aid of a cheap A-B lnb switch you can update OTA

I see the current OTA update for the HDR ends on 10/11/2009 (http://www.dtg.org.uk/industry/download_schedule.php).

So the new one could be only a week away?

Surely that was towards the end of '2001'.

BTW, I apologise in advance for calling you Shirley.

If I remember correctly 2010 had that quote, from the end of 2001, laced through it, especially in the beginning.

Sorry, my question appears redundant as having read the various bits and pieces it appears that the update will only be available to beta testers which does not include me.

I see on the BBC News it says how popular iplayer is on Virgin boxes.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8343350.stm

I guess they are all connected to the web?

How many freesat boxes are?

Virgin boxes are by definition connected to the virgin cable system which is basically fibre based so even if you don't have a fast virgin broadband connection, behind the scenes you do.

iPlayer via Virgin is delivered in the same way as all there On Demand stuff using dedicated servers at the headend and is the same quality as the original broadcast and all in realtime. It doesn't use the internet/web at all.

Whilst we have Virgin VOD services I can't see any reason why I would use iPlayer (or the other on Demand services) via a PC or Freesat box - bring out the firmware with iPlayer stuff disabled

Might be being a bit thick here, but once the software is downloaded do we all become beta testers?

Assuming we are, how would one connect the Foxsat to the net as most would have to hardwire it to their router which is often upstairs?

And....one last question would the playback quality be any better than on the Wii which I use as an absolute last resort, as the quality is horrendous!

All these questions!

As a beta tester, that's what I'm getting tomorrow. I'm getting quite excited!

Probably. Some of us who have had the HDR since it was launched feel that we have been in that role all year.

I too use the wii as a last resort, from what people have said who have seen it, yes it seems its much better - but how good will depend on yourdownload speed.

Am I missing something here? Beta testers are supposedly getting the update on USB flash drive any day now yet the OTA update is likely within a couple of weeks. What's the point of the beta test phase with the full release so close? I get the impression the beta testers are either under amazingly strong NDA's or it won't actually happen.

The OTA update will most likely appear on all Freesat units when they launch BETA, but only be accessible to those on the trial by way of a code, which to me seems like a risky way of doing it considering codes soon appear on the web! Unless of course it is a unique code per user that cannot be used on more than one device once initiated.

Id expect all humax pvrs to get update at the one time. The beta testing might be restricted by ip address.
