Hi Guys, I am looking at choosing my next mobile and one of the ones I was looking at was the N97. I looked at the review site here and just wonder if the comments are reflective of your experiences ? The general feeling I get is that its a great phone but buggy as hell. Would that be fair ?

I've not seen most of the problems they complain of. The phone is arguably underpowered, although that's also a trade-off with battery life. The camera lens getting scratched is a real problem, but one Nokia acknowledge and will fix if you ask them.

I like the hardware and think it is basically a good phone. The biggest issue (for me) is that Nokia have dropped the O/S from future phones, so there's not much future in 3rd party apps compared to, eg, the iPhone or Android. If I lost my phone tomorrow I'd probably get one of those two instead of another N97.

(But if I had an iPhone its restrictions and politics would probably make me wish I had something else, and Android still doesn't have many phones yet and I don't know if it has a phone that would suit me.)

Hahaha, where did you read such a thing?

Symbian phones are still being launched, and it still holds the biggest marketshare.

Its a Google operating system for mobile phones. Pretty new but seems to be growing fast!

Mostly made by HTC although Motorola and Sony Ericsson are joining the party.

Is this fix a one off then (a design issue) or something that is going to keep happening ?

Had my contract been up I would have been in exactly the same situation as you. It has happened to me soooo many times.

this is daft. they aren't going to stop product development because you have bought a phone. they release a new flagship phone around every 6 months. given the time between announcing and releasing this is always going to happen.

happened with the n95 > n95-2 > n96 > n97

it's just the nature of buying technology.

I guess you just jump into the market and grab the best phone for your needs at the time. If you wait for the 'next best one' you will always be waiting.....

Their high-end smart-phones seem to be moving to Maemo. Eg the N900. See also reports like The Register. The issue is whether 3rd party developers would rather write for the iPhone or Linux-based operating systems now.

Is this fix a one off then (a design issue) or something that is going to keep happening ?
I've not had it done, but I gather it fixes the issue permanently. It replaces part of the case with something that allows a bit more clearance.

Oooh now that looks snazzy. I have spoken direct to O2, VF, Orange and T-Mobile direct and none of them have any details of the phone on there systems. Do a google on N900 however a lot of the 'independants' are offering the phone.

Any idea who will be carrying this phone. I am reluctant to use these companies as to be honest I used Phones4U once and that is more than enough. Prefer to deal direct with companies I know.

Read ...
In the UK the Nokia N900 will be free on a two-year contract at £35 monthly plan from Orange, or for £10 on a £30 per month plan at O2 (with a two-year service agreement). We will keep you updated on this news as soon as we hear anything else, so will you be buying the Nokia N900.

.. which amused me because that is something the sales guys dont know yet
