Help PLEASE: Buying ipods for Christmas gifts.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read/reply on my thread. Okay, here goes:

We have two daughters aged 12 & 13, music mad etc.

They have both hinted they would like 'ipod touches' for Christmas.

Trouble is my wife and I haven't got a clue about ipods. I want to get them the most suitable and upto date ones. We'd like to buy them the latest versions ... that's were we are totally confused. These ipods also play videos and the likes too? Also, do they vary in price from retailer to retailer?

Anyway enough rambling, what are we looking for please?

Thanks in advance.

Yes. What you want is the 3rd generation or 3G one which is the latest model. You can get the 8GB one from Amazon for £135.10 at the moment.

Get them from the Apple store, either your nearest one or via the online store. The prices won't be much different (or any different) to other stores and you'll be guaranteed to get the current models.

Amazon is cheaper (£135). The 3rd generation is the latest model.

Sorry, didn't notice john176bramley's post above pointing out same.

Please note that the 8GB model is NOT new. It's just a continuation of last years model to keep the price down. The 32 and 64GB models are the new ones with better hardware inside.

plus you get 'free' engraving to put a personal message on the ipod touch at the apple store, might be handy if you are buying 2 of them for sisters !!

If you get any iPod over £100 from John Lewis at the minute you get free speakers worth £60, i think Currys or Comet were doin a similar offer as well, definately worth it if they are wanting to listen to their iPods in their rooms or whatever without headphones, also its an extra gift, they don't need to know that they were free!!

As others have said, the current 8GB iTouch is no different from the 2nd gen model, only the 32GB and 64GB models are the 3rd-gen version.

There's nothing wrong with the 2nd gen iTouch in itself, but 8GB will probably not be sufficient capacity for daughters who are "music mad" as they'll fill up the available 7GB of storage very quickly once they start loading it with music and videos. As such if you want to get them the latest and best, the only option is really the 64GB iTouch if your bank balance will stretch to two of those (the 32GB is a good fall-back option though).

If they are "music mad", and that is the main use of the device, an iPod Classic would be a better option as it has a larger capacity (120GB) as well as being cheaper than all but the 8GB iTouch, but if they have specifically mentioned the iTouch, it is likely they want to be able to install apps from the AppStore (you've no doubt seen the ads-- whatever you want to do, "there's an app for that"). The iTouch is the top model of iPod, but because it uses flash-memory storage rather than a physical hard-disk drive for storage, is more expensive and has less capacity than the iPod Classic.

simply go to the apple site, they only showcase the up to date model. as always, buy only the one you can afford.
and yes how much music do they have.
