I honestly don't think you're a million miles off there. Having listened to Danyl's own stuff, it's easily within his comfort zone, not sung in a great range and I didn't notice any massive belts - none of this is a bad thing BTW. It's not to my taste but okay to listen to.
Compared to his XF performances he seems to be pushed into something he doesn't really know how to do, often his big 'money' note sounds strained - like it's being sung from the throat rather then the chest giving it a 'tight' sound, not a natural belt like someone who's used to doing it.
Best example I can give is compare his IDWMAT and David Cook's belt at the end of his, Danyl looses the power towards the end and starts sounding 'thin', David, who does sing in this style already easily maintains it.
Personally, I think it's Simon's song choices are the main problem, he's picking songs that Danyl isn't naturally suited to, and pushing his voice where it isn't used to going - and I don't trust the vocal coaches on the XF to sort it, after last year when they turned Diana, a girl with a pleasant voice with an interesting quirk at auditions/boot camp into a girl who's voice was all quirk and nearly unlistenable to.
