All of us who use the PVR are surely skipping through most of the adverts etc. A very good function and a major reason for buying a PVR.

There is one big disadvantage though......
We don't get to know about new series and any good stuff on the box - perhaps won't know about the restarting of a new series that we have liked etc.

I rarely buy a daily paper any more so recently have had to find other methods of keeping up to date. I would be curious as to other peoples system of ensuring they are up to date with anything decent put our way on TV...

In the UK standards for digital television there is a standard for "trailer booking" and "broadcaster recommendations" but they have yet to be widely implemented.

These standards will likely become more common in the UK from next year and in particular on new Freeview HD products.

Also with the advent of internet connectivity on boxes there will be further scope to improve the ability to find things you might be interested in.

A better thread title would have been "General PVR disadvantage"

Yes, that would have been more generic! I am not getting at Humax here.

The last couple of weeks I have been using tvtv.co.uk which seems to be quite good and Radio Times online together. Combined they work ok since tvtv personalises what it shows you much better than Radio Times does and the Radio Times has a lot more detail on each program.

The thing that I have been missing though is a decent search facility like the Tivo had....which reminds me of a question I would like to ask - why is it that Freesat doesn't rate movies etc? Surely it could use some generic database from online like IMDB?

Absolutely brilliant program.
I have just downloaded it to test out. It looks very good - does it take long to get the hang of it?

It can be used on 3 machines before an additional subscription will be needed, see 4.8:

I think it is quite easy to customise and there are tutorials and a forum to help.

A better thread title would have been "General PVR disadvantage"
But generally do all PVRs have a skip feature? I find it a really useful additional extra, apart from no advance program info.
Of course CH4 get their own back on me skipping their adverts and take the same amount off in kind before the end of the program!

So far I've relied on the fact that most of what I want to watch premières on the channels I mostly watch(*).

Two series of concern for me are Law & Order CI and SVU. They premiere on Hallmark and apart from those shows there is nothing else on there but repeats (a classic Sky channel, lol - 1% new stuff, 99% repeats). I haven't watched that channel for over six months now :-/

But full use of a PVR (ie;time shift everything without exception) does mean that you have time to browse the EPG and that's largely how I catch stuff. I just set aside ten minutes every day to trawl through the channels looking for anything that might be of interest.

(*)Although tbh I'm quite channel agnostic rarely pay attention to the channel name(**).

(**)Which fits nicely into the fact that thanks to my PVR I never know when anything is on either

I personally use http://www.tvguide.co.uk/
You can subscribe to a daily highlights email and a new series email which does as it says on the tin... It tells you of any new series about to start.

I didn't find it did.

It suits people who use their computer every day. A couple of people I recommended it to liked it but gave it up after a year or two because they were not the sort of people who switched their computer on on a daily basis. Others would not now be without it.

It's really good being able to have the channels that you watch most at the top of the listing in order of their importance to you.

Do take an hour or so to check out some of the customisation features as it can make a big difference to your satisfaction with the program.
