Yikes.... where does that leave Louis. It was in the papers here in Dublin today that the funeral is definitely Saturday. I guess a very fast plane will be on stand by from Dublin to London. Can't see Louis getting away with three absences. Wonder if Simon would go too... he is very associated with Westlife!

I don't think its a case of "getting away" with abscences. I'm sure death is a lot more more important than who will be in the sing-off.

You dont have to go to the funeral. Usually there is a removal to the church the night before and if you cann't go to the actual funeral people will got to that and/or visit the family. Louis will know what is apporpriate to do.

Personally I think its a bit different. It's one of the band members dads of who he manages as opposed to one of the band members with Stephen Gately.

I am sure he will send some cards and flowers but will be on X-Factor as he is not directly associated to the person.

This is true, he can always go to the removal instead.

What a hard decision for Louis to have to make, let down one of his biggest band members by not attending and be on the X or not go, but surely he can get a plane back here in time anyway. Stephens was different as he knew he would be too upset and wanted to attend the send off party that night, and rightly so as well.

I think he will attend, in fact I hope he does, he knew this man very well, it was not just someone he kinda knew as someones dad. I also hope he makes it back here for the show, whichever way if he attends on Friday means he would not be here for rehearsals either.

Thoughts with Nicky and his family, such a shock for the guy, and he was not even at home in Ireland at the time, it is never nice to be away when something like this happens.

My thoughts exactly. It never even occurred to me that Louis would go. He can't be expected to attend funerals of relatives of everyone he manages. That's taking things a step too far...

This isnt anyone though is it, it is Westlife his biggest band ever who he not only knows themselves but has known all the parents for years and years. He may just send a card and flowers but I just dont see Louis as that type of guy, he may however feel he cannot go to yet another funeral so soon after Stephens. Did Elton not go to one due to having been at the fashion guy who died, someone else died very soon after it.

Do you go to your friends' parents funerals? I don't.

Unless Louis was especially close with him, which is unlikely, why would he go?

It's a whole different matter to Stephen Gateley

Paul Robinson's understudy in the Leeds United youth team in the mid 90s.

Not sure what he's done since.

I think Louis has been very close to all their families to be honest with you, they were all very young when he took them on to manage them and it was Shanes mother who asked him to hear her son plus Kian and Mark sing, then they auditioned for two others, being Nicky and Bryan, who has since left the band.

In Ireland there is a different attitude to funerals than in England, it is usual to attend the funeral of a parent of a close friend or work colleague. In smaller towns neighbours all turn out as well, as a mark of respect.

I will be very surprised if Louis does not attend the funeral, even if he leaves immediately afterwards.

Thankyou I thought that was the case, as my grand parents were Irish. I hope he attends I cannot see how he would not.

Your grandparents could probably tell you of their surprise when they first received an invitation to an English funeral, it is a major cultural difference, especially for older migrants who grew up with the idea that it was disrespectful not to attend a funeral of anyone you knew. Mostly it was a way of showing support to the bereaved.

It is changing now as people have employment in companies that are more concerned about attendance than social obligations of staff.
