^ this.

... but giving it a go:

Vida La Vida - Coldplay
Just Like A Pill - Pink
Mad World - Gary Jules
Sex On Fire - Kings Of Leon

Special mention to:
Can't Get U Out Of My Head - Kylie
Poker Face - Gaga
EDIT - Crazy - Gnarls Barkley (poster above reminded me!)
... for when I'm feeling in a poppy mood, they're are very mainstream but they will be classics...

(Hasn't this decade been dire for number ones? )

Every decade you can be sure someone says "this is the decade music died". I can remember people lamenting the state of '90s music, and I know people will have done it decades previously too. It's all about nostalgia and when you were born.

Admittedly, the singles charts is less important than it used to be but that's only because people have easy access to such a diversity of music that fewer people simply follow existing trends.

I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor - Arctic Monkeys
Stereophonics - Dakota
Bring Me to Life - Evanescence
Shapeshifters - Lola's Theme
Destiny's Child - Independent Women
Crazy - Gnarls Barkley
Just Dance - Lady GaGa

Don't want to get into too much of a debate on here but I think my specific point was I feel that the value of the singles charts has gone rapidly downhill, not necessarily the state of music in general. There are a lot of reasons for this, including but not limited to the death of the physical single/the continuing rise of the LP/downloads being included in the chart/reality TV talent shows/illegal downloads/youtube/myspace music, etc, etc, etc.

That doesn't mean there hasn't been good music created, but I would personally suggest what you're getting topping the charts isn't of the standard as previous decades. Just a personal view though

I just went through this list and it is absolutely shocking

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...2000s_%28UK%29

There is no best number 1 of the 2000's imo, just the least worst, what a joke. Don't get me wrong there are a few songs of this decade I have thought were amazing but they were not number 1. That list pretty much sums up the noughties.

In a very very dire decade,
Crazy by Gnarls Barkley stands out for me as one of the very few songs I even liked, let alone no.1s.

And that is coming from a Queen fan of 26 years - who would automatically have said We Will Rock You by Queen + 5ive should be the best, but even I know that is bull.

I know what you mean, I also struggled to find number 1's I even liked. I think Dakota by Sterophonics, Toca's miracle by fragma, Just Dance by Lady Gaga and maybe one or two more are decent songs but other than that it is pretty abysmal.

Not many to choose from I'm afraid usually all of the good songs are kept from the top ten by the shite anyway! If I had to choose it would probably be either.
Coldplay - Viva La Vida
Razorlight - America
La Roux - Bulletproof

Other than that I can't think of any more off the top of my head!
