Gone back to Sky, what are my rights regarding an HDR refund?
Hello All.
Signed back up with Sky tonight. Full package half price for 12 months. Free HDR box. Had enough of the HDR foibles that 'in my opinion' have justified the return to Sky, despite the monthly fees that are now due. Can anyone tell me what their experiences of returning an HDR to Currys has been? What are my legal rights, does anyone know? I will of course do my own research too but thought i'd ask here. Cheers Jono |

Your legal rights are:
* If the box stops working within 'a short time' (typically a couple of weeks) you have the right to a full refund or brand new replacement. After that all you can ask for is a repair or partial replacement. * After six months it will be up to you to prove that there is a fault - prior to that it's up to them to prove that there isn't. Bottom line:If you've been using the box for more than a couple of weeks Curry's don't have to do anything other than repair it or offer a partial refund. Of course they might decide to go beyond what the law requires but it's unlikely. They don't have a very good reputation for customer service at the best of times. |

Your best bet might be to sell it on Fleabay.
Although the major bugs in the PVR would be enough to get a refund if you took it back immediately any retailer could reasonably argue that if you've had the box for a month or more it was clearly usable. Your timing is a bit questionable as well since it really does look as if the box will get its update in the next couple of months. |

What 'foibles' are you talking about?, and if you onl;y signed up last night, I don't see as you've had any time to notice 'foibles'.
As Currys didn't supply you the HDR then you couldn't return it to them anyway. Currys merely forward your details to Sky, they aren't ASA's so can't supply Sky. ![]() Try reading his post again, Nigel. In your rush to defend Sky you seem to have overlooked the fact that he wasn't actually criticising them. |

Actually given ebay's now ridiculous fees you're better off listing it on Amazon.
Plus it means your potential customers aren't lumbered with the ghastly paypal. |

To clear up i am going to sky, with a new free HD Sky+ box from sky.
I have a Humax HDR box to 'get rid of' I did make a mistake in my original post when i said i had a free HDR box, should have been free Sky+ HD box. Have had HDR since January.. Foibles are Locking up about once a week, requires a mains power recycle, this ruins recordings etc Lost Series links Went on holiday, power cut caused a loss of all scheduled recordings Very user unfriendly menus compared to Sky+ Some channels have "no or bad signal" despite the same channels being picked up fine on my old Sky+ box before i sold it. etc etc I will try and take it back for a full refund as having done my research i was aware of the update coming but it never did. They will eitther accept this or they won't, i'll take my chance and then sell it if they wont have it back. Cheers Jono |

@Nigel
Well, the whole thing is a shame but at the end of the day we, as a young family, believe we will benefit in many ways from the switch back to sky. Not as much hassle Better range of programs for kids and adults alike Better useability Cheers for all the comments. Jono |

Good point.
Plus it means your potential customers aren't lumbered with the ghastly paypal. Have refused to purchase several items from supposed reputable websites because they would only accept paypal. |

What's your problem with Paypal?
They plaster their supposed cast iron protection all over the place but buried in the T's and C's they say that if there is no money in the account of someone who defrauded you the protection is void. So you thought you were safe doing business with someone but if they turn out to be scam merchants you're left high and dry. I also refuse to do business with people who are associated with paypal. |

I cannot see any indication as to how long you have had the box.
However, I suspect you are on dodgy ground trying to get a refund because you seem to 'have changed your mind' I haven't changed my mind, i've always thought it slightly annoying to own and use. All that said it has soem nice features that are probably better than the SKy box i am about to get, btu on the whole, quiet a disappointing year really. I have been hanging on for an OTA update but none has been forthcoming, The mere fact that one hasn't been released is enough for me to think that this product is unsupported to the point where i gave up fighting the problems. What's your problem with Paypal? For small businesses it's been a godsend as it means it's possible to accept card payments without the monthly fees the banks charge. As a consumer I prefer it as it doesn't require keying in my card details (and revealing my card details to numerous differnet websites).

I can see that a desire for extra channels is a perfectly valid reason for moving to Sky but trying to blame such a move on a box that actually works perfectly well most of the time is a little eccentric, to say the least. Particularly since you come to this decision just before the update is due to arrive. Still, what's done is done but I'd say you have zero chance of a refund on the box if you've had it for over ten months. |

Timing!
Yes, the timing was a little weird but believe me, i check this forum every few days to see about an update and have been disappointed for so long. SKy called my wife a few weeks ago and we thought an offer was on the cards. When they called the other night i was cooking dinner, agreed to the upgrade anyway and finished dinner. I had my usual evening surf and hey presto, as i said to myself when i clicked on this forum, the news of the impending update was rife.
That said, we've all been expecting an update for ruddy ages and i will only believe it when i see it. Maybe there'll be a Jan 2010 and still no update' thread? I wouldnt bet against it. Some of my issues have been there since day one and i haven't been bothered to do anything about them. My fault and my problem when i dont get a refund! Never mind, i'm sure someone will want one somewhere. Jono |

Best of luck... The above are just some of the reasons why I ditched Sky HD after 2 years of trying to get them to sort these problems. I find Freesat great never had any problems.
Dave As for the reliability aspect, Sky occasionally needed a full reset as has the HDR. But only once. There have been one or two reports of little niggles but I accept these as the unit's quirks. And these, as we now all know, will be eliminated when the new firmware is released.I guess that there will still be murmuring amongst the less than gruntled folks out there but, it must be remembered that the Humax was never the hybrid of all the things good. It's just a box that does stuff. Oh yes, and provides entertainment in forums on cold November mornings.
