Am I alone in thinking how disgusting it is that the bbc on our behalf is spending a fortune of the licence payers money in arranging a traditional eastenders funeral for Mark fowler. Who cares. He is away fro the programme. Now on the Bill and making a total arse of that too. How dare the PC luvvies at the beeb waste more licence payers money on a tottally needless event. It so typical of them they think they know whats best as the act out their own little fantasies. The sooner the beeb is privatised the better. They are welcome to have mark the apeman fowler back from the bill because he has proved what a crap actor he is.

hi alan45.the worst is this now confirms us bill fans are stuck with him for the duration.you are right this is a waste of the television tax(as i like to call it).funerals christenings and weddings are just padding in soaps,an easy 10 minutes to fill, cameras panning round the guests while the vicar does their thing.maybe the funeral can be in mark's birthplace(twycross zoo).

They should have the funeral but have big storylines for returning characters, rather than focusing on Mark's death. Like mention it but have the big storylines unfolding at the same time, might justify them wasting all that money. Like the storyline I've written in the Eastenders Is Bollux thread lol

How much exactly ARE they going to spend, and why is it going to cost so much?

I dont know the exact figure but they are talking about horsedrawn hearses and the like and floral tributes and the biggest funeral ever seen on tv. Im sure it wont be cheap. All this for someone who has left the series and gone on to the bill (unfortunately). WHAT IS THE POINT

soaps are supposed to reflect reality (not that they succeed that much) but if someone well known in an area dies do you think theres not going to be any mention of it.

it won't cost that much anyway, thats what props depts are for

I doubt whether the props department could rustle up a horse drawn hearse and all the limousines that will be required

Sorry, but I think this thread's SO funny! It's not real life! It probably cost a lot more to build the Queen Vic and most of the sets. They spend more of licence payer's money on things like Born and Bred.

Of course its not real life. We know that. But I think its pointless spending a fortune on a character who has left the series. All they have to do is say that he died abroad and the body was cremated because of his illness and his ashes were returned home. Poor Barry didnt get much of a funeral did he.

In his case, the coffin definitely *would* have been too expensive.

i believe it's generally known as a 'plot device', most people are looking forward to a bit of nostalgia, seeing the old characters and the final culmination of what was a very brave storyline. It's a shame they wimped out by having him die of AIDS off-screen.

I wonder how laundrette-worker Pauline would be able to shell out for all this? (Unless Mark had a decent life insurance payout)

Would Mark be allowed life insurance ?

I suppose he could have had it before his diagnosis

But you could just as easily say that characters could talk about Ronnie and Tariq being in hospital without the expense of building the set. And what about the Easenders 'specials' where they go abroad? In fact, you could save a lot of money by not having a set at all.

Take it to its natural conclusion and let EE be on the radio like the Archers then. Think of the money that could be saved

All Im saying is I think the idea of the beeb spending so much money on a' funeral' for someone who has left is ridiculous. I am sure if they needed a plot device to bring back cast members there would be a more cost effective way of doing it.

I'm sorry, maybe I'm missing something - but how long has "Mark Fowler" being acting in The Bill?

Or maybe you are just having trouble splitting fact and fiction?

DUH!!!! sorry Mark Fowler is of course not acting on The Bill, the person who played him Todd Carty is now on the Bill. As to whether he is acting is another matter.
