Probably my favorite song ever. Being a massive Prince fan always worry when anyone takes this one on. Thought Ruth did a good job last year.

This could make or break Danyl. Simon keeps banging on about his amazing vocal ability and tonight we will see one way or the other.

if all goes as it should, I'm counting on Danyl to top his audition tonight

I so hope Dannii or Louis compares it to Ruth's version (which he won't beat) just to see what Simon's gotta say about it.

He will reply "Ruth's not here this year, it's about Danyl not Ruth" yet when someone sings a song Leona sang in the competition he compares it to her.

Just want him to make a fool of himself once again - hypocrite.

He'll sing all the talky bits in that stupidly-accented, muffled, tuneless way, with big starey eyes, then he'll (badly) imitate Ruth's emotional explosion at "Honey I know.." then he'll proceed to do his usual obnoxious wide-mouthed shouting at the end. Formulaic as ever.

I agree, it is the best song (along with "Stand By Me"). Ruth was a real music lover, introducing that song to the competition, as well as "Knockin' on Heaven's Door". She should be made a mentor - we might actually hear some half decent tunes if she was picking them for contestants. Instead we get Circle of Life and Unchained Melody.

I hope your right. He has the greatest song choice and hope he does something good with it.

I have to agree with the OP.

Purple Rain is Danyl's make or break song. If he pulls it off he will have put himself in a good position to progress in the competition. If he mucks it up then I'm afraid it will be the end of the road for him.

It's like comparing chalk with cheese, Ruth has a great voice and so does Danyl, they're different sex and have different styles so what is the benchmark that decides who sings it better?
There isn't one, if Danyl gives a rip roaring performance tonight some people will prefer him and others will still think Ruth is better.
That's how it should be.

It would seem to me that many people watch the X Factor in the hope of Simon making a fool of himself, rather than watching the contestants sing.
It's a bit odd............No?

You know, Ruth's version wasn't that brilliant. It was very good, but it's beyond overrated on here. I don't even think it was Ruth's best performance (Always) and other acts gave better performances last year too.

Danyl's version is going to be very interesting though, like many have said, its definately make or break.

I can see Danyl's performance going something like this:

*Incoherent, crap and quite singing for the first two verses*

PUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRPU- PPPPPPPPPPPPPUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRP- RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNN

*Danyl jumps around the stage like a monkey on crack screaming Purple Rain repetitively; Simon gives standing ovation and hailing it the best performance in the history of X Factor and the best performance of that song bar none. At that point this forum will go into the biggest meltdown of anti Simon and pro Ruth threads.*

Sorry, not funny I know.

Impossible. He's shown himself incapable of doing anything other than the same old formulaic performance, with minute variations each time.

He'll give the same formulaic performance tonight. Some people will go "wow isn't he amazing he's really redeemed himself hasn't he wow!", and others (in my opinion, the more tasteful and perceptive ones ) will call it what it is - the same old tiresome crap.

I will not be wrong.

I agree, he's got to knock this out of the park this week if he's to restore himself in the competition.

I am already prepared for negative posts on here even before he's performed...such is Danyls lot this year on XF.

He is going to be really shouty at this. He'll probably get loads of praise from Simon, but I reckon Louis will be the one to remind him that Ruth's version is unbeatable.

Im not looking forward to hearing him destroy this.

I wasn't comparing Ruth and Danyl?
I was saying I hope a judge does compare it (not that I personally will), so that I can see Simon being the hypocrite that he is.

Everyone is different, not just Danyl and Ruth, so therefore he shouldn't compare people such as Lucie and Leona if he can't take others comparing his acts to other artists.

No, I don't watch the show to see Simon making a fool of himself.
I watch it to support the acts I like. Just like when I watch any reality show.
However, if people only tune in to see Simon make a fool of himself then that's up to them and I wouldn't say it is "odd", no.

I have to agree with Billy, Simon of course will deflect attention away from Ruth who knocked my socks off with her performance of Purple Rain - I know its not really Ruth's song but IMO it was her defining moment.
Yet when another contestant (eg Lucie or even Ruth last year) sang a song Leona sang, Simon compares it to her.
Hypocrite Summertime wasnt even Leona's song.

As a matter of interest, there are a few people predicting how Danyls performance might be sung tonight.
I'd like to hear how they think some of the others performances might be sung too.

I don't think they'll oblige though as they don't seem to be interested in anyone other than Danyl.

Yeah but you have to remember there are only about 150 people on here which is nothing really. About 100 of the people on this forum support John and Edward so that just about says it all. Im sure in the real world Danyl will get the support if he pulls out a good performance.

No, it's because all the other contestants (except perhaps for Stacey) aren't as depressingly predictable as Danyl.

There are stronger views about Danyl on this forum then any other performer. Some love him and a lot dislike him. But remember its the same 150 people on this forum each week so it dont count for much really.

I feel that you are completely incorrect.

Danyl is never formulaic by any stretch of the imagination.

I can't be bothered to argue the toss with you because I can see that you have your opinion already set in your mind.

All I will say is that it's the bulk of the remaining contestants who will be formulaic verging on karaoke, simply because that's the best that they are capable of. Very few have developed beyond that as they lack experience and it shows.

Well you have already compared it as you say danyl won't beat it(Ruths version).
And the poor guy hasn't even sung it yet.
Hardly dispassionate, is it?

Don't fool yourself; you "can't be bothered" to argue with me because you know deep down that Danyl is a talentless, formulaic wannabe and everything I have written in this thread shall be proven correct later this evening.

So who are you supporting? Let me guess that great pop duo John and Edward.
