With the amount of amazingly bad rubbish around like Spice Girls, Girls Aloud and god only knows what else that has no heart, no soul, no quality about it whatsoever, and is just beyond description I thought I would place a link to a "real" piece of music, a truly beautiful & mesmerising song, so simple, just a guy on acoustic and an amazing singer Hope Sandoval of a previous duo called Mazzy Star......you wont regret checking it out, I am curious to read opinions of all the pop music lovers here...........

I found it quite tunelessly 'miserablist' but, more crucially, soulless.

A very nice song, however, I highly object to your notion that this sort of music is somehow the only real, meaningful kind of music, compared to "shallow, bad pop." If all music was like that song, the world would be a pretty dull place.

Pop music is lively, innovative and constantly developing. To say that it's "soulless" just because it is often stylish, fun, electronically produced and doesn't present itself in a pretentious "deep n' meaningful" way is ridiculous. Girls Alouds' songs and some other chart music is actually written by an innovative production team called Xenomania who are experimental with pop music by, for example, changing traditional verse and chorus structures (see 'Biology'.) In fact, a great deal of pop music has hidden depths, as it is often built on minor chords, so although it often sounds upbeat and happy, it also has a sadder side. I am not that I'm saying all pop or chart music is good, though, obviously.

Perhaps what you are saying is that there is not much peaceful, acoustic music like this around, which I'd be inclined to agree with and perhaps it would be nice if there was a little more of this that charted. It doesn't mean that everything in the charts is bad, though, even if it's not to your taste. If you can't objectively see that pop music has value, innovation and is far from being "soulless," then it is you who is shallow and not the music.

Mmm, Mazzy Star... *sigh* That's my favourite song of theirs, along with Fade Into You and Ride It On. I'm yet to check out Hope's latest material... really feel like I might now...

I swear I've heard Into Dust in a tv show somewhere. It sounds really familiar.

I don't see why you have to promote this artist by slagging off others.

That's a serious Lily Allen thing you've got going on.

glad you like the song Nick666, I agree with your comments.lol..your quoted phrase does bring all the contests like X-Factor et al to mind

LovelyLou, glad you like it, its good to see someone appreciate something of quality these days!

CANDYANGEL, it might have been in the recent Virgin Media tv ad, this is where I found it from.

IndieLove92, glad you like it, yes I have checked out Hopes website & she had just released a solo album, I think its available now, I intend buying it, anyone who can write & sing a song like her is a seriously beautiful person.

Electroflower, hi there, I dont know why you seem to think that I am suggesting that this is the only decent stuff around or whatever, no idea where you are coming from, perhaps you have some issues, as I said above I just wanted to share a piece of music with everyone and in view of the fact that this is a music forum, thought it appropriate to do so.

judging from the majority of the posts above I am glad that I have posted this very beautiful and moving song

Hello, I'm sorry if my post sounded a little harsh. I have absolutely no problem with you sharing songs you like with the rest of the forum and as I said, I also like the song and agree that there is not much of this kind of music around lately.

I know you didn't say you think this is the only decent stuff around. What you did imply, which I objected to, was that "amazingly bad rubbish around like Spice Girls, Girls Aloud and god only knows what else that has no heart, no soul, no quality about it whatsoever, and is just beyond description," which I take to mean more upbeat, electronic, possibly manufactured pop/chart music is all a load of crap, while music like the song you posted is somehow more "real." I've stated why I disagree with this above.

You also said that you were "curious to read opinions of all the pop music lovers here." I'm a pop music lover and my opinion is that I do like the song you posted but object to you putting down vast swathes of other pop music without really having a good reason to in the process of telling us how much you like this song.

Personally speaking I think this is a better song - better chorus.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-s4ykK2Tgs

I think it's a genuinely brilliant pop song (no wind-up, I'm being serious). A classic. One of the best pop songs I've ever heard. Imagine U2 or some other 'serious' group covering it. I defy anyone to say the chorus of that song is bad. I think it's an incredible pop song.

I think it's unwise to dismiss most pop as shallow. A great song is a great song even if it's manufactured pop - it's the melody that makes any song great. Having said that, it would be a boring world if we all liked the same sort of music.

Why is this "real" and Girls Aloud's music isn't?? That makes no sense to me.

Man alive the fact you have to ask that is a bit sad nate, I don't mean it in a horrible way but just picture the talentless chav Cole standing there doing a mime instead of bothering to sing for her sad fans , but then when she does (along with the rest of the talentless group) it's not really very good is it??

I despair for our current generation of teenagers if they like this stuff, instead of real music like (just for example & off the top of my head) Mozart, Rachmaninov, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Enya, Mazzy Star, Hope Sandoval, various real blues artists and so on, get the picture??

I personally think that Girls Aloud have some fantastic, brilliantly constructed, intelligent pop songs. I would say the same of Lady Gaga and La Roux.

But I'm also a big fan of Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective, Beach House, Deerhunter, Fleet Foxes, Girls, Fever Ray, Memory Tapes, Phoenix and St Vincent, to name but a few. It genuinely puzzles me when people make this distinction between so called "real" and pop music.

Here's a few links for you all, by the way...

Just because you don't like it doesn't make it bad and talentless, or any less "real" than any other music. I'm 19 and I love Girls Aloud and other pop acts like Lady Gaga and Little Boots, but I also love Rammstein, Pink Floyd,Metallica, REM,Kate Bush, Guns N Roses and Velvet Revolver, so why is it necessary to dismiss someone's tastes and insult them based on them liking one act that you don't? I'd be very surprised to find any music fan whose entire collection was built on one single genre.

Nobody can dictate to others what is good music and what isn't because the wonderful thing is, it's completely subjective! I don't happen to like some of the acts you listed either, but I won't call you a sad idiot for liking them and tell you I despair of your generation like you have for us pop lovers, because I recognise that people can like different things and that just because I don't like something, that doesn't make it terrible.
