Entry level MP3 player

I am looking for some advice. Hubby and I have ipods so that is what we are familiar with. However, our almost-6-year-old son has asked for a CD player for his bedroom for Christmas. We wondered if we might be better off getting him a basic MP3 player and a docking station with speakers. That way he won't always be asking to borrow our CDs and he can use it in the car on long journeys if he wants to.

An ipod is a bit pricey for a present at his age so I was wondering if there were any alternatives you could recommend. The requirements are:

1. needs to be able to dock on some speakers
2. needs to be fairly easy to operate
3. needs to have the ability to select your track - so NOT like an ipod shuffle.

Thanks

You say an iPod is a bit pricey, but you don't give us a budget. What memory size would be adequate? Would he want video also? Battery life?

Once you do this, we can probably help you further.

Most iPod docks accept other MP3s via a 3.5mm socket located on the side, front or back.

You would just need a cable to connect the two. Unfortunately, they won't charge the player.

Sorry. No video is required (his wanted a CD player so music only is fine). Capacity - probably more more than 4GB (that's the capacity of my ipod and he wouldn't need anywhere near as much on his as I have on mine). Battery life would need to be quite good - and I suppose in an idea world something that could plug into a car cigarette lighter to charge!

As for price - probably £50-100. There is a chance that his grandparents could get him the speakers bit which would mean we could spend a bit more on the actual player.

get him a cd player - you can get a walkman type thing for a tenner or so - and burn him some cds- i would think a six year old would manage a cd player easier than a mp3 player.
