Freesat mode allows you to view the channels that have signed up to the Freesat 'group'. Sky News is not part of the freesat group so it's not visible on your EPG. If you go into non freesat mode you can tune into that and any other free to air channel.

Allows you to view the many other FREE TO AIR channels that haven't paid for a Freesat EPG listing / number.

Non-Freesat mode is simply that. It does not have (and is not limited to) the selection of channels specified in the Freesat EPG and therefore when in this mode, you can tune in every single channel available from any transponder of the Satellite your dish is pointing to (Usually the same as if you were pointing at Sky's Astra). Currently, it amounts to about 900+ channels; some being completely useless, some being encrypted and lots FTA (free-to-air).

You access it from the MENU, SETTINGS then STB MODE and switch back and forth from there.

Is it of any benefit? That depends. In my case, I would say yes but then I have Diablo CAM in which I have an expired (but still active) Sky subscription card (the older blue one). By the time I have pared down the Channel List and got rid of all the dross (shopping channels etc etc), I'm left with a total of 82 channels which includes all the ones normally on Freesat (minus its shopping channels and other junk) but with the addition of free stuff on Sky like Sky News and a couple of the Travel channels but best of all, another 2 HD channels. Luxe TV HD you can get FTA (with no card at all) but in the case of Channel4 HD, Sky3, Fiver, Fiver+1, Five USA & Five USA+1, these are all encrypted but free with a FreesatfromSky card (or expired like mine) and that is where the Diablo CAM comes in handy... Saves having to switch to Freeview if there is anything on them we want to watch (and you certainly can't get Channel4 HD on freeview... yet anyway...)

Your mileage may vary of course...

If you have never done it yet, you are quite correct. You have to go to SETUP, then MANUAL TUNE (as opposed to Freesat Tune) and do a scan for ALL first before STB Mode will appear on that menu but that is where you (eventually) switch back and forth from one mode to the other... I was forgetting the first step for a box that has never been "there" before...

I have no clue what's going on because I just tried to post you a link to the site and it won't appear for some reason so if this message appears, I'll try again...

[Edit:] apparently ok now as it has appeared...

These damned adverts are a pain in the rear and keep popping up completely unformatted and all over the pages

A warning, the new white Sky cards do not work with these CAMs, and it is likely the blue cards will be turned off in the next few months.

It's a shame you can't add "non Freesat" channels to the Freesat channel list yourself manually.

I realise there would only be now/next schedule information, but at least all the channels would be in one place - with PVR functionality!

Cheers,
David.

Fiver and FiveUS aren't currently FTA, so won't appear. They're FTV, i.e., free but encrypted on Sky (and Freesat from Sky).

You can't do scheduled recordings of non-Freesat mode channels, only instant ones.

The freesat spec won't allow it.

They will if he selects "ALL" and not just "FTA" in the scan. However, as you pointed out, they will appear in the list with an "ENC" flag next to them...

I use it to archive BBC HD recordings without encryption.

So is there an alternative way of doing this?
