I have loved The Smiths and Morrissey since 1983 when I first heard 'What Difference Does it Make'.

However back then I was in the minority. A lot of my mates went down the 'The Smiths are Depressing' route without ever really hearing their stuff.

It seems now that Morrissey is finally getting the praise he so deserves, even my mates admit that they got him and The Smiths so wrong back in the 80's and that he is in fact a lyrical genius.

I second both your comments; I think he's just brilliant. Definitely one of my idols.

I'm not a Morrissey fan but I loved The Smiths. I think Morrissey and Marr together were a remarkable combination and one of the best songwriting partnerships in music history. However, I'm sorry to say most of Morrissey's solo songs do little or nothing for me, except perhaps some of the early ones like Suedehead and Everyday is Like Sunday.

I’m very much the same. Adore The Smiths, but other than Viva Hate and the odd song like “The more you ignore me the closer I get” I’m not too keen on his solo stuff.

However the poignancy and poetic power of his Smiths lyrics have seldom been equalled IMO and helped go a long way to making the Smiths one of pop's truly great bands.

I think he's done some great solo stuff. You are the quarry, for example, had some great stuff on it.

Loved all of it, but two stand outs are -Irish blood,English heart and First of the gang to die.

some youngsters prefer his solo stuff to the Smiths purely because it was the first time they heard him

absolutely agree ... morrissey/marr are one of the best songwriting partnerships ever, up there with lennon/mccartney, jagger/richards, bowie, ray davies, etc

i think its a shame that the smiths are often overlooked as pioneers of the 80's by pop fans who prefer the SAW material... lol.. yep another dig...

I think it's a shame that the Smiths imploded so early on. Morrissey was never as good without Marr and Marr has never been as good without Morrissey. You sometimes get special songwriting combinations and they were up there with the best.

Morrissey is the Man, The last time I saw Morrissey in concert I thought he had aged so well, still very very cool. He feels like an old friend somehow cause I grew up listening to The Smiths. I love the sound of his spoken voice as well as his singing voice.

yeah, i just cant get into moz's solo stuff. it doesn't come close to that which he did in the smiths. it really was a meeting of 2 great musicians. neither has managed to surpass the smiths on their own

i dont know what the OP was saying about them "morrissey is finally getting the praise he so deserve" - the music press loved the smiths in their day. not so fond of morrissey on his own though. remember the NME and their "Is Morrissry a racist?" tirade?

did they split up too soon? probably. would i like to see them reform? god no - its a great musical story as it is and would be tarnished by "come back gigs"

From articles I've read from back then, they were fairly keen to slate The Smiths.

"The frenziedly-awaited debut LP disappoints, thanks to elephants-ear production (grey and flat), and ludicrously overblown expectations."
- Danny Kelly, NME

"Fifteen minutes with you," the singer tells us, recalling the particularly apt Warholian dictum about stardom and the quarter hour, "well, I wouldn't say no." When it comes to The Smiths, I would.
- Wayne King, High Fidelity, August 1984

well with a band that was getting that much attention there were always going to be negative critics but the link below gives you an idea of what the music press thought about the albums. not only that, but the press loved them because they of morrisseys charisma and it gave them stories to write about.
