Mariah Carey in the 90s, with Whitney Houston a few milimetres behind her, with Aretha Franklin a few millimetres behind her.

Hmm...

Female: Has to be the one and only Tarja Turunen. Need I say more? I don't think so.

Male: He's virtually unknown outside Jrock fans and more often than not underrated amongst them, but I'm going with Juka (now known as Shaura) who got unearthed back in 2002 by the lead guitarist in that video (who seems to have a knack for pulling world class vocalists out of nowhere). He's brilliant live, has a great range, and his voice just has that something that impresses me.

I also agree with whoever said Amy Winehouse. Not my style of music perhaps, but you've have to be deaf not to see that she has serious talent.

At last......somebody with taste. Just been listening to Hats.
Just shows how bad the "commercial music" has been the past nine years when I read other posts.

For those that may branch away from what Sony BMG want you to hear then look up The Blue Nile. It should be anybodys starting point in finding out about music and what it can really acheive. To all of the others listening to the same format over and over again...........dont you all get bored? Or perhaps ignorance is bliss.

If we're talking about vocal range then it has to be Minnie Riperton, her vocal range was more than five octaves. Pure class and beauty. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1aMSZp_WHc

Paul Buchanan's voice is so beautiful. I've been listeneing to Family Life today and it gets me every time...so powerful but gentle if that makes sense. Makes me cry.

Stupid question but OP... when you say 'this century', do you mean since 2000 or since 1909?

Beyonce, then Leona, then Christina. Sometimes I'm like "wow christina is the best singer" then I'll think "umm actually no she's not, at all". She tends to shout more on her belts, rather than actually belting.

Oops, I probably should have clarified that in my post.

I mean since 2000.

Christina Aguilera, in the studio, is miles ahead of any other vocalist around imo.

That said, I find her live performances to be very hit and miss, when she nails it, its amazing, when she messes up its a car wreck.

In terms of live performances, I'd say Beyonce and Leona Lewis are stronger, Beyonce for her ability to change up her songs live and Leona because she is pretty much pitch perfect and I find myself looking for mistakes just so I can tell whether or not she's miming. I think both are potentially as good as Christina, just neither of them really push themselves the way she does.

Not particularly blown away by any guys at the minute.

Seriously, what part of this century do some of you not understand?

Amy Winehouse. Best singer of this decade.

Cheryl Cole! Just kidding

Christina for me and Will Young something nice about his voice. Although does Christina fall into last century as she started in 1999?

OMG i am so thick. I thought the title said Vocalist of the decade.

I take it back. Has to be Mariah Carey. But for this decade, it would be xtina.

I like Josh Groban he has a very powerful voice and a good range. Female wise was going to suggest Sarah McLachlan but she released stuff in 1990s.

Those who are suggesting Alexandra Burke..seriously after one album? you can hardly judge someone as best of the century from one release.
Babe Rainbow

Lisa Gerrard - nobody else comes close
