That's what I meant, a burger at Chili's in the U.S. is about £5, over here it was probably £10 - £12, which takes the joy out of it somewhat.

Thought I'd add Burgerville to this thread.

Only in Oregon and Washington but I reckon they just beat In N Out for quality, tasty burgers. Their seasonal ranges are incredible.

Outback Steakhouse is good, and my personal fav was Wild Jacks Steak 'n' BBQ on International Drive

Would advise steering clear of Sonic, it was awful

Applebee's has the worse service of any restaurant I've been too.....ever! So slow!

Anyone been to BJs (quiet at the back!)? Much better than the likes of Applebees/Hooters etc.

Another good Restaurant chain in the USA for good quality steaks and cocktails is Ruby Tuesdays!! Theres a lot of them around the Minneapolis/ St. Paul area!! They do an excellent salad bar as well!!!

http://www.rubytuesday.com/

Also for good Mexican food try Don Pablos

http://www.donpablos.com/

Also for a good Sports Bar & Grill, try either Champps or Buffalo Wild Wings

http://www.champps.com/default.aspx

Ruby Tuesday have just opened their first UK restaurant at the St David's Centre in Cardiff.

Interesting that you liked Wild Jacks, have you seen the reviews on Tripadvisor?

I really enjoyed Golden Corrall, lots of locals ate there too!

Smokey Bones was a really nice steak house.

Went to a Chillis' in the UK and had an awful meal...went to one in the US....awful... It's like they smother everything in salt!

Golden Corral is ok it's a buffet, if people like that. I'm leary of buffets because I'm a little afraid of people touching my food.

Smokey Bones has steaks? I've only had barbeque there, but I'd bet it was good I like Outback for steaks. And also Famous Dave's does great BBQ!

Chili's is pretty good, better than Applebee's, has some better stuff than Ruby Tuesday's (they make me wanna puke), and TGI Friday's only does some things good. I'd pick Chili's over all of them, however there's a better place called Max & Erma's they're the best!

The thing with the US is that there aren't that many nationwide chains, but many many regional ones which themselves may be bigger than most national chains here. A restaurant which may be everywhere in New England (such as the Ninety Nine grill: http://www.99restaurants.com/) nobody in California would have heard of it.

However, one of the joys of visiting the US is that the proportion of independent restaurants and bars is so much greater than here.

I've always had good food at Chili's, plus it's very cheap and they have their 2-4-1 drinks on a lot of the time.

I've always enjoyed Arbys in the States - Roast beef and cheddar sandwiches are great!

Also Krystal for steam burgers(devine).

In Georgia they have Logans Roadhouse which are great -Cracker barrell looks interesting but not tried.

In London I had Eds Diner last week (v good) and The Diner (nice but ridiculous 12.5% service charge)

The thing is theres a major difference in US Restaurants and UK Restaurants, even when Restaurant chains have places both in the USA and the UK, like TGI Fridays, for example!! Over in the USA you REALLY do get value for money but here, for what you pay for a meal you get nothing really!!! A lot of Americans complain about that when they come over here!!!

A case in point: In TGI Fridays in the USA you order, say, a steak, you can be sure that the steak is about 1 - 1 1/2 inches thick, but in the UK, you order the same steak and its the thinness of shoe leather and even has the same quality!!!! Prawns(or shrimp as they call them in the USA) are huge in the USA, but here in the UK, they are really tiny, and thats even King prawns or shrimp!!!!

But one thing I can say that I hate about restaurants in the USA, I hate their fries, and they always serve meals with mashed or jacket potato!!LOL. Their fries are always thin spindly things, unlike our fries here which are predominately steak fries, so hence much larger!! I love Nandos because they do good sized fries(Theres a few Nandos in the USA, by the way, mainly down the East coast).

Also, when I am in the USA, when I order steak, I always ask for A1 Steak Sauce to pour over my steak. It sets it off a treat!!!! But over here I cannot find A1 Steak Sauce for love nor money, either in stores or in restaurants!!! The reason being is that people over here will get to know how excellent it is for things like steaks and barbecues and the sales of things like HP Daddies Sauce and brown sauce will rapidly fall into decline and the manufacturers of those sauces just dont want that happening!!!

They're really over priced for what you get IMO. Their shakes are delicious though - especially the Butterscotch! Worth the £3.75 or so!

I've been a few times - their food is pretty nice, and their beer selction isn't bad either. You can get the sampler, which is 4 1/4 pints

I have seen A1 Steak Sauce for sale in Fortnum And Mason.
I've also seen it somewhere else, maybe an independent food store in Ealing.

However, quite why you'd want that extremely runny stuff, when you can have nice thick HP sauce is beyond me!

If you have to drown your steak in A1 the steak must be rubbish in the first place. A blob of Dijon or French maybe, A1 most definitely not!

some places call them prawns as well, but it seems for the most part in chinese restaurants.

I also think you will find a wide range of fries in the US. It's a big country and fries are as differently made as there are restaurants. They may have different names however, like fried potatoes, fried potato wedges or crinkle cut fries. I tend to find the thick fries are at more 'restaurant' style places where there is more time to cook. The fast food ones obviously are thinner for speed, but we have a wide variety of fries. I myself love tater tots (although not a fry lol).
