With the new upgrade, we can now move encrypted HD recordings onto a external hard disk (Ext 3 formatted) and play them back directly through one of the USB ports. Great, so I can now leave my external hard drive permanently plugged into the PVR to give me more memory. But what happens if I need to change the PVR for some reason? - will a replacement Foxsat PVR be able to play these encoded HD files or is the encoding machine-specific?

It's machine specific - this has been confirmed.

If you change HDR then your encrypted HD recordings are toast.

The recording were player specific before the update and there doesn't appear to be any indication that they aren't anymore, so I'm afraid replacement of your HDR will render your stored recordings on an external device as worthless.... I hope I can be proved wrong

It looks at least possible that the freeview version of this is going to get chucked out by Ofcom. If that happens, the hardware locked encryption could well be got rid of on freesat on the basis that its audience share is/will be dwarfed by freeview, and so is a waste of time. (And money paid by HDR owners, who have had to fork out for the development costs. No getting that back, unfortunately.)

If that happens I might get one, depending on whether the DVB-S or -T system gives the best HD picture.

When a unit is repaired by Humax's official service centre they are usually able to ensure the identity of the device is maintained and thus when it is returned to you the recordings are playable.

Many thanks for the re-assurance in the event of a breakdown. What about if I wanted to upgrade to a new Humax HDR box when it's rolled out in the future? - can I ask to keep the same identity? If not, in a couple of years from now when I have a pile of externally archived stuff, then it would pay me to stay with the equipment I've got rather than spend money on a shiny new Humax product. Aren't you shooting yourselves in the foot in this case?

Use non freesat mode. (Yes I know no epg which is a pain). The recordings are not encrypted.

Don't want to start everybody of again on this matter, but there is no timer in non FreeSat mode.
