I'm doing an essay for uni on my own choice to do with music & pop culture, and I've chosen to discuss how music isn't really about music anymore, but more about image, marketability, personality, which wasn't such a bad idea when it first came around, but now the scales have tipped, and horrendous singers can get famous for singing, just because people like them. I've thought of two examples already, Kelly Osbourne, and Cheryl Cole. Can anyone think of any other singers along the same lines, who are fairly atrocious vocally, yet still sell tons of records and sell shows out? I was going to include Britney, but I feel she deserves a tiny bit of credit, as she can generally hold a tune.

Rihanna. She cannot sing. I think its a pity because I like her songs, but I could never go and see her live because of her terrible voice.

Hmm, is it about singers who actually CANNOT sing? Or those who we dislike? LOL

Those who cannot sing well:
Bob Dylan
Lou Reid
Ian Dury
Mark Knopfler..........................But those four are all inherently listenable still
Victoria Beckham

others I am sure.

Those who I think should not sing (snigger)
Liam Gallagher
Michael Stipe
Adam Duritz
Beyonce
Alanis Morrisette
The guy from Stereophonics (always sings with a very fake voice - his real voice is actually ok)
Robert Plant
The singer from Nickelback

Oh, I could go on but what is the point LOL.

Seriously, YouTube any of her songs (I Kissed A Girl, Hot and Cold, Thinking Of You, Waking Up In Vegas. Acoustic or non-acoustic) she is AWFUL at them all.

I don't think they have to be bad singers for this "image over talent" rule to apply. Britney has a really good voice in actuality and if you search for songs like "Baby Boy" and "Let Go" by her you will see she is clearly above average in that she can do more than just hold a tune. But you could mention how these songs were left unreleased in favour of showing a less talented version of her as her success appears to be achievable by little girls. I mean even Cheryl can technically sing in tune and do things with her voice such as runs, riffs and falsetto (which isn't something the average person can do if we are being honest) so it's not a case of her not being able to sing, it's more what is being marketed.

Cheryl Cole (you could stick the whole of Girls Aloud (bar, maybe Nadine) in your project)
As much as I love her, Rihanna
Katy Perry

You make some interesting points. I don't think Britney is an amazing singer, but I do think you are onto something when you say that they didn't pick songs that would show off what voice she's got, in part to make her seem more accessible.

I think Chris Martin has a dreadful voice, as do quite a lot of male singers whose main appeal is to the laddish element who might like to sing along. That is projecting another kind of image. It's more of a football terrace vibe. Oasis songs are easy for the typical man in the street to sing along to. Great songs IMO, but a major part of their charm is that they aren't difficult to sing.

While the girls who might not be great singers are expected to be pretty and polished, the male equivalents are commended for having "character" in their voice, and have perfected the rolled out of bed after a late night in the pub look.

This is getting ridiculous - you are listing those you don't like. Some of them can sing very well.

What a pile of rubbish. Honestly, you can say you dislike their songs but half of the people on this list are better than average singers and a few are exceptionally good.

Katy Perry live is awful, and Rihanna is awful when she isn't static. The sound great on a record but live... no. I'd sadly have to drop Katy White of the Ting Tings in there, she BELLOWS the tunes out live, not exactly singing but very entertaining. I mentioned her because they're music isn't manufactured in the way the big pop stars are, its very DIY but at the same time she can't sing live, something to consider.
