Xbox 360 and Analogue Surround Sound System - Help Please!!
I already have an analogue 5.1 speaker system (Creative Inspire 5100) which connects to my pc's sound card. I'm planning on getting an Xbox 360 and have discovered that for surround sound it has digital out (not sure if it's coaxial or optical). If possible, I'd like to get 5.1 surround sound out of the xbox 360 with use of my existing 5.1 system. However, the problem is neither my system or pc sound card have a digital in socket. Therefore, is there anyway I can get the surround system and the xbox to sync up?
Am I correct in thinking I have the following options? - external sound card with digital in. - AV receiver. |

as u may have guessed, only digital out= surround for xbox. its not that analog wouldn't be possible or less quality, but shoving 6 more rca jacks on the back of a console is not done. so they rely on digital out. so you need a decoder.

What motherboard or soundcard is on your PC? It maybe that there is a post on the motherboard, or soundcard, that allows you to fit an optional digital in/out port. Alternatively, one of the analogue ports may double as a digital coax out and you simply need a £2 converter from Maplins.
It's very unusual for digital i/o not to be included these days. Software such as Audacity (which is free) will allow you treat your computer as a d/a converter. It might not be possible even so, unless the mobo/s/card is 7.1 and you can asssign digital in to one the unusued outputs. (Actually, that may entail assigning one a specific a/outs to a different output port - say s/woofer-f/centre to the r/back-l/back so that you can free up the specific digital port). If the above isn't possible, you're going to need a Dolby Digital D/A converter to 5.1, and a 6 channel switch box (3x2 channels) so that you can switch between the computer and the console. Not sure if such a beast exists. To continue using your current speaker set, using the analogue pre-amp outputs on an AV amp/receiver would do the job, (meaning you can continue to use the receiver's power output stages for standard speakers) An old second hand job from eBay might be suitable. If you go that route, ensure you plug your PCs analogue outputs into the 5.1 analogue inputs and you can use it as both a DA converter and a switchbox. It'll also give you an upgrade path to fit unpowered speakers in future. |
