Although it's probably been mentioned elsewhere, i thought I'd take the opportunity here to congratulate the BBC on tonight's Strictly.

Following the success of last week's trip to Blackpool, I'll admit I thought that the rest of the series would be a let-down.

Then when I heard Bruce was off ill I was prepared for a car-crash.

So a big WELL DONE to all involved for pulling off tonight's show. Tess handled front of house duties admirably (particularly the judge's comments, and it was refreshing to see the host about the studio to do her links). Claudia was just brilliant backstage - ('Serious Face'/'I have to read now'/'OK let's jump'). Ronnie Corbett wasn't exactly necessary, but he broke up proceedings nicely without intrudin too much.

If (as rumoured) Mariah Carey pulled out at the last minute then nice job on the replacement musical guest. It was also nice to see a new dance performed by the professionals - part of me hopes they're road-testing new dances with a view to freshing up the dance roster.

Thank you! I agree that the BBC pulled together a great show despite a number of gremlins: from Brucie being ill, to the 2 injuries and Mariah allegedly 'pulling out.
Tess did REALLY well; we all cheered when Ronnie appeared on the stage at the beginning, and Claudia was inspired; so funny! She should be on every week.
The Jersey Boys' number was brilliant - and the dancers were great.
It was as though everyone was pulling together to keep the show on the road- and it showed! Did you see Tess, Claudia and Ronnie do a big hug at the end? It was a real team effort and WELL DONE! for a great show.

I agree, although I think Tess and Claudia could have managed without Ronnie. He really didn't do much but sit in the audience and chat on his mobile. I hope Jade makes a speedy recovery as well as laila.

I am not Tess's biggest fan but I thought she did a good job and Claudia was fab as I expected she would be.........they really didnt need Ronnie I DO wish they would realise that SCD doesnt need a comic presenting it

The show seemed much more friendly and genuine without Bruce there. I hadn't really been enjoying this series much and now I realise that was due to it all being about Bruce and how his 'me, me, me' and unfunny jokes spoiled the flow. Without it and him there it, in my opinion, worked so well. Huge congratulations to Tess and Claudia too!!!

Yes, Tess did a great job and I hope the BBC now realise they don't have to look for a new presenter, this year or next. Tess and Claudia make a great team.

I agree, not really fond of Tess but I liked her last night. You can tell her and Claudia are good friends as there was alot of playful banter between the two of them which ultimately made the show alot nicer to watch.

Some of the lines Tess had to say were the standard ones before or after VTs or judging, as usual straight off autocue. But she even managed to make them sound spontaneous. She seemed generally more confident doing front-of-house.

Claudia and virtually all the dancers have formed a mutual admiration society and it'll always be relaxed and funny with her in the Pit.

RC was harmless but not Strictly Necessary.

Go girls! Hope to see you both again next Saturday. Bruce, you look after yourself and take your time getting better.

The show had a very different feel to it and I think I liked it. Clearly it wasn't as polished as it could be, but the team gelled well together and you could see what it would be like after a few more shows.
Tess is front of house material. She's stunning, professional enough to read an autocue and deliver a good performance, but not really sparky enough for backstage chat.

I agree...well done to Tess and Claudia - they both presented a great show.

Tess can hanle the presentation better on her own and having Claudia backstage EVERY week would be fantastic- she is so funny and natural and gets along with the contestants brilliantly.

Dear old Ronnie Corbett was a sweetie and also filled in very well but Tess and Claudia could have pulled off a great show on their own.

Brucie is a legend but I agree with the post that said he dominated the show - and not in a good way...Tess really was excellent last night and demonstrated that she is more than capable of taking over the lead....a male comedian in the role isn't an essential

IMO Tess showed the same quality that endears Bruce to nearly all the celebs who've been on SCD, and that's 100% support for them in both triumph and tragedy.

If SCD ever replaced Bruce with a "star" whose comedy style was to score points off people, it would go down the toilet faster than you can say Graham Norton.

Good thread OP!

I thought Tess was better at Brucie's job than her own! I'd be quite happy now for Tess to take over from Brucie when he retires and have Claudia in Tess's role. Claudia did a superb job last night - and I got the feeling the couples liked having Claudia in with them in the red room!

I thought both women did brilliantly, especially considering the panic and misery there must have been going on backstage. I preferred the tone of Tess being out front, not having do a long joke before introducing the next one and handling the judges's comments well. And I loved seeing that Claudia's ITT lovliness ('I don't know why I'm holding your hand. It's nice. I'm new.") transfered so well to the show itself. I love her. I would be very happy to see them present it all the time.

Ronnie was a sweetie, there just wasn't any real role for him.

While I don't mind Bruce, I really enjoyed having Claudia backstage and Tess at the front, it should be like that all the time. I didn't really like Ronnie Corbett though- he couldn't stand up for more than five minutes and his jokes were worse than Bruce's.

.
With the host sick and two last minute injuries the show could have been a total disaster. As it was I enjoyed it more than any other this series. It felt good to watch, Tess was professional and so refreshing not to have the loooooooooooooog joke when introducing the couple. Nice to hear the judge's comments without the wittering in the background and just a generally enjoyable evening's entertainment without the need to press mute. I thought Tess seemed quite natural at the role and came across as relaxed and pleasant - full marks to her.

Claudia was brilliant of course, funny and empathic - just what the show needed. Tess and Claudia complimented each other perfectly.

I so hope TPTB have learnt from last night and will continue with the girls next series. I wish Bruce well but to be honest I'm not looking forward to his return now I know how much I enjoyed the show without him.

I think she coped admirably. Never disliked her, but never thought of her as any more than average ability for the task set and easily replaceable.

However, on her first night of being main host she had to cope wih the old script with Bruce's lines crayoned out and Tess or Ronnie written, main guest no-show, one of the dancers injured, and the looming car crash of another dancer being in the dance off and not being able to do it - all that time to fill out somehow. Plus she had to hold together something that was poorly rehearsed and constantly changing on prime time Saturday night TV. Added to that she had to do something with the old duffer brought in to tell jokes.

Given a normal show and a script tailored to her and Claudia it would be brilliant.

I don't get the negativity when I read in the discussion thread that the show was a shambles because Tess was fronting. When I finally watched in myself in iplayer, I thought they did a marvellous job. How refreshing without Brucie's corny jokes!

Don't get well too soon, Brucie! Rest at home for another week. C'mon you deserve it.

I think the thread title should be "Thank you Tess and Claudia"!
They did brilliantly, and I absolutely loved the show.
Despite the problems, it had a relaxed, friendly vibe to it which is always lacking when Bruce is there demanding all the attention.
Corbett was completely surplus to requirements, and without his appearance, the show would have been the true ensemble piece that it ought to be.

Well done Tess - hope you're first in line for the job when the encumbant finally goes.

I have to agree with the OP, well done BBC last nights show was fabulous. In fact I can't remember when I last enjoyed a Strictly so much. Tess and Claudia were brilliant together and in my humble opinion, should be made regular hosts.

Sorry Brucie fans, but I didn't miss him at all and in a straw poll of my family and friends who watch SCD - they didn't either! The judges actually had time to speak and give proper critiques because all the time hadn't been spent on Brucie's jokes and his banter with the audience. He's a bit OTT for me nowadays.

Saturday proved to me beyond doubt that SCD needs a male presenter, and preferably an ALPHA male.

I thought they did a really good job under very trying circumstances.

Usually can't stand Tess, but scripted and playing it straight she actually handled the main presenting okay, she's not any good at reacting to what's just happened and making off the cuff comments, which Claudia is fabulous at and shone in the Tesspit - Ronnie was completely surplus to requirements, but other than that I thought it went really well and I wouldn't mind Tess presenting in the future (and I really NEVER thought I'd say that) with Claudia backstage (which I'd love)
