corrie and the gays, lesbians and the err, im not too sure
ooo im on a soap rant tonight!
did anyone else think it comical that the (shock shock horror horror) 'gay man' (who incidentally is a nurse - cheers to the scriptwriters for throwing off stereotype there, youve only put gay/straight integration back a decade or so) should befriend dyke power-girl (her equity name i hasten to add) AKA katie... also will todd only be allowed to become a nurse when he comes out? at the mo the potential oxford grad is a porter which im guessing is a metaphor for bisexuality as only dancing queens can become nurses according to our darling scriptwriters... ok ok, martin is an exception (but hes only there cos he failed his exams, which also explains why hes been in a permanent moody teenage strop since the dawn of time...) im too tired to rant anymore |

i wish they could let him 'just be a man who is gay' but they dont seem to be able to!! i dont know if i just notice it for obvious reasons but the first time he met todd he gave him the once over, he was stood in a very queeny way in 'the infamous lift' swinging his head all over the place... etc...
ps - do remeber v vividly tony and simon... they destroyed my faith in homosexuality for years... he he |

I have to say I don't think Corrie have stereotyped Karl at all. Ok so he's a male nurse, so what? Lots of straight guys are nurses aswell. As far as I can see he's just a normal guy who happens to be gay. I can see him now giving Todd the once over when they're in a scene together. But thats only because they're familiar with each other now
but at the start when they went to the concert, I didnt' notice any lingering looks on Karl's part. I'm just so glad he's not a screaming queen ala that gay bloke in Brookside. Ok I know there are gay guys like that out there but Corrie have really tried to avoid the gay stereotype. Karl being a nurse at the hospital is just for storyline reason, somewhere both characters will easily run into each other and interact, thus moving this god damned story along lol How much slower would it have been if Karl worked at the hospital and stopped into the shop every now an again? They've done a grand job so far have Corrie. At least theres a guy of experience writing this storyline. Not a straight writer having his fantasies played out on screen by having two girls just snog each other for the sake of it lol |

im sorry but i have to disagree - fair enough my rantings as far as the nurse thing were a little un-founded, but the way this storyline has been played out in terms of the ways todd has acted is frankly silly, and sends the wrong signals to those whose only notion of gay life is what they see through the telly. i agree that corrie deserves praise for not installing a poptastic fag but at the end of the day the idea that for however many months it has been, todd could simply ignore and never mention or hint at his true feelings (this is tv so even a look speaks volumes) is ridiculous. ive been there, and what people are seeing is not how it works.
then again this is the channel that believes 17 year olds can run farms or own a share in a garage (with no qualifications whatsoever). dont get me started on the farce that is emmerdale... |

Again mate I'm going to have to disagree with you. How can you say "thats now how it works"? Doesn't everyone deal with this in their own way? It is very feasible that a character like Todd could ignore his feelings and doubts about his sexuality. Just because he might have thought he could be gay in the past, doesn't mean he would necessarily be "looking" at other blokes in the Street. It is only up until now with the arrival of Nick and indeed Karl that we see the internal struggle becoming an outward and obvious struggle for him.
I have done what Todd is doing now. I am still doing what Todd is doing now. Up until a month or so ago I was ignoring my feelings. I've never once ever hinted to anyone that I might be gay. It doesn't mean I haven't gone over it in my head though for the last god knows how many years. And like Todd with Karl, only now someone has arrived in my life that is making me face up to these feelings. Everybody is different mate, just because you've been there but didn't do what Todd is doing, doesn't mean that thats not how it could work. I've been/am there, an has been scarily mirrored by the storyline, in terms of how Todd has acted and is dealing with it. |

I think the problem here is one of "signposting". Soap watchers are used to having things signposted for them. Generally speaking we know which characters fancy each other & which characters are gay / lesbian etc.
In the case of Todd this storyline came out of the blue. There was nothing in the programme to suggest that Todd was gay / bisexual / confused about his sexuality and if there had been no spoilers the whole audience would have jumped up & said:- "Where the hell did that come from?" after his kiss with Nick. In real life of course, people can be questioning their sexuality and other around them won't have a clue, but in soaps we're used to know exactly where people stand & who they're going to end up having relationship with. Corrie have chosen not to do this in the case of Todd. There was no clear "signposting" of his confusion at all. You can look at this in one of two ways:- either they've moved closer to real life with this storyline or (despite what has been said in the press releases) it was something that was decided at a story conference in order to achieve the maximum upset (& hopefully huge ratings) |

I dont think that soaps always sterotype with gay and lesbian characters. You wouldn't know Derek in EE was gay, Tony wasnt a typical Gay character and remember Shannon in Home and Away?! i think it does mirror real life. some gay people do fit the sterotype and some dont!

You wouldn't know Derek in EE was gay, Mind you, Pike was very effeminate too, so i think it has more to do with Ian Lavender (with a name like that... .

I admit I was a little out of it last night , but the idea that Nick's arrival should suddenly prompt Todd's feelings to jump to the surface because 'ooo isnt Nicky pretty' is laughable... has Todd never had any other male friends he has got drunk with before...? Has Todd never found another guy attractive...? Why now? It is implausible to think that this storyline couyld be played out in such a way in real life and i think it is crucial for scriptwriters when dealing with issues such as this to stick as close to reality as is possible. Ultimately noone cares that Charlie would never be interested in either Bev or Deirdre, but with something like a gay storyline in which the views expressed and actions of the characters will shape the views of many people, who, as i have already said, have no understanding of homosexuality other than what they see on television. Oddly enough a friend has just been on the phone who simply confirmed that to very many gay people this storyline is extremely funny, but realistic? To quote him, 'Not at all!' Please don't get me started on Quote:

Please don't get me started on He'd had girlfriends all the way through his teenage years & into his 20s & never regarded himself as anything other than straight. Then he met & fell for a guy that started working in his office. They're still together. My point is that we try & label people too much & put them into boxes. I have always believed that you fall in love with people & that (for the majority of people) there's at least one person of both sexes that they could fall for. I believe that very few people are completely gay or completely heterosexual. In the case of my friend (& Todd) they both met a person who sent them off in a different direction (ie towards men) and although this doesn't happen in the majority of cases it does in some. |

the question is do we need a storyline based on the experiences of such a minority of the gay population? the only reason corrie want the anguish and dramatic (my a**e) looks is for bumper ratings... 'oo whats the queer gonna do tonight then...?'... its terrible and i have begun turning over whenever the two of them end up in a convenient confined space together...

Secondly Todd has realised that he was attracted to Nick & will no doubt realise that he's attracted to Karl at some point. The writers would have been able to get much less mileage out of this if it was purely a story of two gay characters getting together. From what I can see Daran Little was the prime mover behind this storyline & he was married with kids before he finally came out as gay. You have to wonder how much of Todd's story was based on his own experiences, don't you? |
