Using Vcr With Humax Foxsat Hdr
malayman
16-11-2009
Having scoured the various forums and not having had any success I hope someone who uses Humax Foxsat HDR may be able to help.

What I wanted to know is how to use my vcr (video recorder) to play videos and record freesat programmes for others. I have no problem recording on the HDR. No success with Humax support but spent a lot of time listening to music on the phone.

The Foxsat HDR manual shows a vcr connected to the scart on the HDR. According to Humax I should connect the vcr to the scart on the HDR, as shown in the manual, put the HDR on standby, and play the video on the vcr. This did not work. I kept the vcr to HDR connection via scart as per the manual, and then connected the second scart socket on the HDR to the scart socket on the tv. With the HDR live (ie not standby) I was able to play the video on the vcr and watch it on the tv. Part of my problem solved.

Now I would like to know how to record a freesat channel on the VCR. I tried to tune the vcr to the freesat channels, as I would have done with analogue tv, but it was not possible. At present the vcr has one scart socket and that is connected to the scart socket on the HDR. No aerial connections to the vcr.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

You can only record on VCR, what you have recorded onto the HDR's hard drive (or what is currently showing on your TV),

By selecting your programme from the Media list and pressing playback, it will also output through the VCR Scart socket. Make sure your VCR has the HDR input (Scart1/2 etc) selected as it's source, and press Record.

It all has to be done real time, I'm afraid.

Rgds.

Make sure you are connecting the VCR to the Humax's VCR socket, and the TV to the Humax's TV socket. Also make sure you have not got power-saving mode in standby turned on. It needs to be off in order for signals coming in via the VCR socket to be passwed through to the TV.

It's not possible because your VCR does not have a satellite tuner in it, it only has an analogue tuner.

If you want to put something onto tape that you've already recorded on the Humax, you have to play the programme on the Humax and press record on the VCR, making sure you have selected the auxiliary SCART A/V socket on the VCR to record from. Similarly, if you want to record something live, put the Humax onto that channel and press record on the VCR.

Thanks for your help. Would I be correct that I should use the vcr remote to select AV (instead of Channel number )
and start/stop recording times?

Thanks for taking the time to reply. With your reply and that from Les I should be ok. I am sure there are others who will benefit from both replies.

Yes, that's correct on both counts. If, say, it's a 1 hour programme, set the VCR on it's equivalent of Instant Record, and then adjust the end time to say 1hr 02 mins to make sure it gets it all.

It almost goes without saying but I'll chip it in just in case you aren't aware - you can transfer recordings off the HDR by USB. This method keeps original quality (standard def not high def though) and can be played on any PC with the right software. You can also turn it into a DVD on your PC with free software.

Yes. You can either set start/stop times on your VCR to coincide with timed events on the HDR if you want to schedule soemthing while you're not there, or press record for instantly recording what is showing on the HDR (either a live programme or a recording that is playing back), or you might be able to use "synchro record" or whatever your particular brand of VCR calls it. In this mode (usually invoked by a menu setting), your VCR will wake-up and start recording when it receives a signal from an external source, i.e. your HDR. You then don't have to mess around with timers on the VCR, you can simply set a Watch timer for a programme from the EPG of the HDR. You will need to experiment with this first to make sure it works. Consult your VCR manual for details of putting it into this mode.
