My 4 year old Humax 9200 Freeview PVR is playing up and before I spend any cash on it (new disks or new box) - I wanted to weigh up Freesat.
I like Freeview - I have no real need for any more channels - there's too much rubbish as is! Rock solid reception in any weather.
But I also like the idea of getting iPlayer on my TV - and Freesat seems to be offering this soon. I also like the idea of becoming HD ready (no HD TV - but seems silly to waste £200 on non-HD ready equipment).
I'm aware that Freeview only supports stereo sound - does Freesat transmit any surround, or better encoding that stereo? I have an AV amp which could decode these things, but just wonder what is actually transmitted with Freesat?
We have a satellite dish (discretely mounted on the rear chimney) which the previous owners used for Sky, and I've checked a year or so ago and still worked. Only a single cable though. Am I right in saying that unlike Freeview (where a single aerial cable can do 2 channels/multiplexes), if we want to record programmes on different channels/multiplex (don't know if that's the same terms used for Freesat), then we'd need a 2nd satellite cable and dual LNB?
I don't want to have to spend lots of money - but I also don't want to waste money propping up old tech. A new disk for the box (see other thread in Freeview Humax PVR section) may be all that's needed - but if it's a new box that is needed, then spending £200 on non-HD Freeview may not be worth it.
Advice? Thanks.
