Why when Ricky and Ali's routines are full of mistakes
First of all, the routines arent 'full' of mistakes. There is the occasional timing issue and the odd stumble. And they are marked on their performance, their finishes and their technique, which are better than most of the other competitors left. Bar Chris whose Paso was the most entertaining thing I have ever seen!

Full of mistakes is an exaggeration...but the straightforward answer is because quite obviously they're not being marked simply on the number of mistakes they make.

Because if you make a few mistakes in an otherwise excellent A level answer you get a good A level. If you recite the three times table and get it 100% correct you get a gold star but have to wait 13 years for the A level..........

Absolutely agree, they are well ahead of the others in terms of ability. However, I feel I must stick up for poor Natalie Cassidy, because although her dancing isn't anyway up to their level, and not likely to ever be, that Foxtrot was for her the best dance she has tackled, and her improvement required a higher score also. Even Craig gave her an 8, and he doesn't dish out high marks readily.

And interestingly Vincent has made the choice to make her dances more difficult and is telling everyone - which blurs the distinction with Ali and Ricky W and gets Nathalie ahead of Chris and Ricky G. As campigns go its a well thought out one. Her hope is that Len and another judge will back her when she has an enthusiastic go at something difficult and people who usually would beat her have the wrong dance for them.
On the other hand the competition is literally physically breaking down in the rank above her so her way is opening up and with it the chance that her votes won't have to make up so much for a lower position on the judges scoreboard.
For the same reason that in diving when someone tries a more ambitious dive and nearly pulls it off they get more points than someone trying a basic one and being competent.
The top 3, or possibly 2 now couples are trying moves and choreography the others aren't even attempting.

This I can understand which makes me wonder why it wasn't taken into account in Saturday's dance off.
Phil's dance, mistake and all, was choreographically far more difficult than Ricky G's VW.

Phil's dance was more difficult and better than Ricky G's so if they had both performed without mistakes he would have won the dance off. But was it sufficiently advanced that it was better when he made mistakes and Ricky G didn't? I'm not sure and the judges were split. I think the decision could have gone either way and still been fair as it was pretty close. What was more unfair was Phil being in the dance off in the first place but that is down to the public vote which often isn't about merit.

Not really - I didn't rate the choreo at all, and thought that he got a ridiculously easy ride by Katya.
Ricky G lead all the way in a pretty difficult dance so the right person stayed.
Everyone appears to forget that Chris has made umpteen mistakes as well yet was never given the low ratings he deserved for them.

Why does everyone assume that Ricky W and Ali have such great Latin and Ballroom technique?
Ricky danced his jive chasses like a beginner with his feet miles apart.

I don't think they do. They would have to train for years to have great technique. But even to my uneducated eyes they are head and shoulders above the rest of the amateurs.

Ricky W started off as the front runner, Ali made her run midway through the series, but coming up on the rails was Jade; which is why her injury is so devastating.
I guess it's better to compare it to gymnastics scoring - there are different difficulty levels, which means you can get more points starting at a higher difficulty level than at a lower one, and this gives you a window to maybe make a mistake and not get penalised too much for it.
