I have just purchased a PS3.

I already own a Humax HDR box, a Sony Dav-DZ260 home cinema system and a Panasonic Vierra Plasma TV (which has 2 HDMI in connections)

Basically I need to connect this equipment up so I can obtain surround sound when using either the Humax or PS3.

To do this I think that I may need to buy I think I need to buy an optical switch so that I can connect the PS3 and humax HDR box to optical in on surround sound system?

Also I think that I may also need an HDMI switch as I think I need 3 hdmi connections, one for the ps3, humax hdr and dvd / surround system. Although if I use the PS3 to play DVDs I could get away with only 2?

If I am correct and I do need an optical switch then does anyone know whether you purchase one that automatically switches upon use or one with a remote control, as I really do not want a manual switch, although if I have to I will.

Any help would be appreciated.

Simon

I think you have answered your own questions.
If you want all three to have HDMI inputs to the TV you will need an HDMI switch.
If you only have 1 digital input on the home cinema kit then you will need an optical switch.
I have a manual optical switch for my PS3/DVD recorder, It works perfectly.

Optical 3 port Toslink switch - £9.99 [click].

Other retailers are available, that may have different pricing, but this is what you want.

With these manual switches, it is important to ensure that the unused devices are not outputting any optical information when not in use. You will need to check. Simply look at the end of the toslink cable coming from the unused devices to ensure they aren't illuminated.

Some devices might need you to turn them off completely.

Not strictly true for a switch such as the one linked to.

The unused inputs are totally isolated from the output in a switch so it doesn't matter if they are on or off. it only matters if you use a splitter in reverse to try and combine two sources to one destination.

In that scenario both sources are connected all the time to the destination. So only one can be on at a time. A switch on the other hand only connects one source at a time the others just shine their light into nothingness

Which is the main reason why it is good to use the right tool for the job.

To feed many outputs into one input use a switch. To feed one output to many inputs use a splitter.
