Customisable Channels
savvy
17-11-2009
Well, we can all learn something new, can't we

Thought I'd post something different from all this update malarkey.

I was looking at the Edit Channels facility in response to another poster's query.

Some of you may know, I changed to an Exeter postcode to get the better quality ITV1 West Country feed, but that left me with BBC1 South West as my BBC1 channel on 101, with West Country regional news & weather.

Well, you can change this, and I now have my local BBC1 East (E) on 101. Can't believe I've put up with it all this time

Apologies to all you that already knew this, but I've not seen it referenced before, here. The instructions, from the Manual, are below :-

Rgds.

Les.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

8.3 Edit Customisable Channels
------------------------------
You can customise the regional channels broadcast by freesat, allowing you to select different regions
from those detected by your postcode.
1. Press the MENU button.
2. Select Edit Channels using the ˄/˅ buttons and
press the OK button.
3. Select Edit Customisable Channels using the ˄/˅
buttons and press the OK button.

Note: This feature may not be available for all
regional channels.

1. Customising Channels
-----------------------
1. Select a channel from the left column.
2. Move the cursor to the right column and select an alternative channel of the region you want and
press the OK button.
3. The selected channel will be customised as the default channel of the chosen channel number.

You're absolutely right Les but unfortunately in that last note "hangs the rub..." This is great for regional BBC but....

Why on earth does it not see ITV as being "regional"??! For us up here in bonny Scotland where the powers that be in ITV land don't think we should get ITV HD (snarl!) and consequently STV doesn't auto-indicate an HD broadcast, we have to fiddle about looking for channel 977 if we want an automatic indication of when ITV HD is active and the only way around this is NOT to use our Scottish post codes but insert a London one instead; so that 103 becomes ITV1 London instead of STV and then the automatic HD indication happens... (but then of course, the BBC channels would need switching back to the Scottish regional variants... what a lot of messing about... )

Hi CPN,

Yes I can see the whole ITV/STV thing is a mess, but not caused by Humax, ITV/STV/UTV ought to get their acts together.

Now, it depends on how much you value STV, but if you reset with an Exeter postcode, you could get the fantastic ITV1 West Country on 103 (with Auto HD flagging), ITV1 London on 977, and customise your BBC1 & 2 Regions by the above method.

Just a thought.

Rgds.

It didn't wipe my schedule, and I didn't think it would either, as they have fixed the schedule deletions after scanning (which is what it does to find your regional channels).

What version are you on?

Edit: Ah, it removes only the timers for the affected channel, in my case 101, as would be expected if you change the channel allocated to that. I only had to set up 4 programmes, interestingly though it shows those programmes as 953 in the schedule (its real channel number), instead of 103.

I did it and it wiped all my schedules too. Software version 11. That is mainly why I asked, in another thread, if things would be deleted after a factory rescan.

ALL of your schedules or just your BBC1 timers?

If All, and you followed the instructions, something strange is going on - this will be another example of boxes reacting differently

And I assure you, I haven't got a special box

All.
But as I mentioned, I haven't done a Factory Reset since software upgrade. Perhaps that may make a difference?

Neither have I.

Although I think it's good practice to do so, I'm not fixing something that isn't broken for me

Looks like we'll have to put a Health Warning on this then, if it's going to affect some people.

It would be interesting to see if a Factory Reset, or the other Default Settings in the Hidden Menu, clears everything down, and then allows you to do this with only the 1 channel affected.

Which "Hidden Menu". I know about the one behind Freesat Tune, but I didn't think there was a Default setting in there. Is there another one?

If I remember correctly clicking on 'Default setting/HDD Format' and 'Format HDD' did exactly that without a confirmation being offered. So if your scolling through and you accidently press the ok button.... if you know what I mean...
