Which DVD player - To use for a home cinema set up
Good morning DS'ers
I am looking to get myself a DVD player for christmas, my current set up of an LG surround system is a little dated and the sound quality just isn't want it used to be. Now that I'm no longer a student I'm looking to change my home cinema set up given my new found 'wealth'- from a simple all in one 5.1 dvd player and tv set up. To something using an AV reciever and HDMI upscalling DVD player. Before any one boasts about blue-raym, my DVD collection isn't likely to change in the near future, but if there is a good blue-ray player within my budget, i'd consider it. My budget will be around £100 for a DVD player. I will be getting the rest of the system after christmas some time. Feel free to post other recommendations, but i'm mostly interested in the DVD player right now - I guess it's my starting point. |

Richer Sounds do the Sony BDP-S350 Blu-Ray for £120 ish.
A very very fine beast (have one myself), especially at that price. Will easily play your existing collection and let you upgrade to Blu-Ray as and when. The only thing you have to be aware of is that it does not have SCART. So you'll need a HDMI lead to hook up to your telly. http://www.richersounds.com/product/...-bdps350-mrdvd To go with it then... http://www.richersounds.com/product/.../sony-strdh500 http://www.richersounds.com/product/...yama-nsp270-si £360 ish all in (Amp Speakers and Blu-Ray) Or for something a bit more capable that lets you use the full audio capabilities of Blu-Ray http://www.richersounds.com/product/...ky-txsr507-blk http://www.richersounds.com/product/...ann-sfx5.1-blk Which would come in at around £570. Just to give you an idea of the sort of money required. |

Some good options from chrisjr. I would add that the Sony BDP-S350 though a Blu-ray machine is a very competant player of SD DVDs and the Richer Sounds' price represents excellent value. Get in there quick if you decide to go for it as they are getting thin on the ground.

Thanks chaps.
I'm taking that onboard now. I've scoured the richersounds website, but with out some feedback it's hard to make a choice. I was thinking of something like the LG DVS450H http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/pro...924/LG-DVS450H Although with a bit of reseach it seems it might be a bit dated now. But one thing I do like it works well with HD content linked up from a computer, something that I use now and again. Anything else I should be looking out for? To ensure my DVD playet will be AV reciever friendly. |

Bearing in mind this is Comet we are talking about here....
I am a bit puzzled by the reference to HD-DVD in the description of that player. Is it really a HD-DVD machine? If it is then that is a seriously out of date machine. HD-DVD died quite some time ago. And I don't like the spec that says it doesn't do RGB via SCART. Even cheap and nasty own brand players from Tesco can manage that! I would still go for the Sony I linked to. It will do everything you currently need and more and grow with you as you develop your system. Why spend a 100 quid on a standard DVD player now only to chuck it away in a year to spend 150 or more on a Blu-Ray when you fancy some real HD content to view on your telly? To me it makes more sense to spend just 120 quid now and save a shed load of cash in the longer term. |

I believe it's just an upscaling DVD with Divx HD playback
http://www.lge.com/uk/tv-audio-video...er-DVS450H.jsp Look on the Features page. It goes on about DivX-HD then mentions Blu-Ray. To the uneducated eye you could be forgiven for thinking LG are talking about the DVS450. And it isn't altogether clear if you need a LG TV with DivX HD or not with this player? And why am I not surprised Comet have got it wrong? There is NO SCART socket of any kind on the beastie.Unless they were talking about the SCART to Composite Video/Stereo audio lead...
