Does anyone know any good legal music download sites? I'm just getting into downloads but I don't know any good sites. If anyone could tell me some, it would be great!

Winmx isn't a "legal music download site" as mentioned at the start of this thread. It's a general file sharing program similar to (but not the same as) the original Napster. Most people will use it for illegal downloading (but obviously, that depends on exactly what they download!)

MyCokeMusic.com is an example of a legal music download site. I don't think any others are available in the UK yet - none that include popular (e.g. chart) music, anyway.

Personally I would stick to downloading off Kazaa, WinMX or whatever takes your fancy or if you want to buy your music legally, then buying the CD in the shops or online. These legal download services are not good quality enough in my opinion to justify paying any amount of money for when you can get exactly the same quality off Kazaa for free.

Also there are lots of DRM restrictions placed upon these files which means that they can control what you can do with the file - for example you may not be able to burn it to CD or transfer it to your portable music player. And even if they allow you to burn it to CD, the quality does not get better - it still remains the same mushy 128kbps WMA.

They should offer 'proper' uncompressed WAV files of the tracks off CD's IMO on these legal download sites so people can play them on whatever platform/player they use, rather than the Windows only DRM infested files they have now.

The only thing to do with the "legal" download sites is to use it to stream the music to decide if you want to buy the album. Hopefully the quality of the downloads will improve in time to come to make it worth your while.

As far as I am concerned the sites mentioned so far are two sides of the same coin:

The illegal download sites are run by greedy people trying to screw over the artists from getting their legitimate royalties.

The legal download sites, where people are expected to pay for DRM encoded music, are run by greedy record labels trying to screw over the listeners by offering them overpriced music in a horribly inflexible format.

I don't want anything to do with either! I don't like greed and I don't like people trying to screw other people over.

What I do like is music sites which offer music in open non-DRM formats for free listening or download with the permission of the copyright holders. Sadly, the best of these sites (mp3.com) was recently taken out and shot by a bunch of moneygrubbing fools, but there are plenty of others. Personally I like Ampcast ( http://www.ampcast.com/ ) .

well, hopefully we'll soon have i-tunes.

the store isn't quite open yet, but the i-tunes itself is available for pc now, and beats the pants of WMP.

Also I think that Wippit (http://www.wippit.com) is available in the UK - it's a legal peer to peer MP3 service.

If you have an iPod it's one of the few places you can legitimately get compatible tracks from (MP3).

If you like the stuff that Warp Records puts out, they do Mp3 downloads too - http://www.warprecords.com/bleep/

Enjoy!

I agree, but there's not really much point in offering uncompressed files when you can get lossless audio compression.

What I have wanted to know for a while is if you download music from iTunes, does it have to be an iPod you download it onto or can you use other Mp3 players?
