Five show Family Affairs is to become the first British soap to allow viewers to decide one of its storylines.

Viewers will be able to decide whether Yasmin (Ebony Thomas) or Geri (Anna Acton) should win the heart of Marc (Michael Wildman) by phoning or sending a text.

Two versions of the episode will be written and the winning episode will be shown on 24 May after a week of voting.

"The interactive week will be fun for viewers old and new," said Paul Marquess, head of drama for Thames, which produces Family Affairs.

I would not have thought that the audience figurs would be high enough?

Its a good idea though I wonder of other soaps will follow suit.

Keep Yas and Marc together forever! I think they are a perfect couple. Yasmin is a babe and Marc is so sexy! What on earth does he see in Geri? She looks like a man!

Actually FA is beating Hollyoaks in the ratings according to Inside Soap, and I phoned up Five to ask them about the axing rumours and they said they're committed to the soap as it's their flagship drama and plus there is some kind of rule about the % of home grown shows you have to have on a terrestrial channel.

this type of interactivity is the norm in latin american soaps called 'novelas',where the audience can vote off unpopular characters.maybe mr marquess could allow 'the bill'fans to vote off the apeman?

Only really watched Family Affairs once, and I have to say I hated it. I think this is just a way of getting the ratings up.
The idea in general is a great one, and I too would love to see it on a soap like Emmerdale or Eastenders... something like - "Should Frank return to the square.." stuff like that...I would certainly vote!

Are Family Afairs really the first to do this?

I watched Two pints of lager and a packet or fags, or whatever it's called a few nights ago (the new series on BBC3) and it had a "Should Johnny live or die? You decide" voting..

I am a fan of the show, and was excited by this news at first, but after Marcs behaviour this week, he doesnt deserve either of them.

I was uner the impression that Brookside did a simliar thing during the trial of the Jordache's.

Didn't viewers decide the result of the trial by phoning in during a week long Brookie special?

At least it doesn't have storyline on the front page of every newspaper (e.g. who shot phil mitchell or todd's gay kiss)

WTF......how many times do i have to say this?

FAMILY AFFAIRS only gets 1.1 million viewers @ 6.30pm

HOLLYOAKS gets 1.9 million viewers @ 6.30pm

FA is the lowest rated soap on british tv! Even the aussie imports get higher ratings! Trust me, it wont be long before its axed and replaced by a new soap.

sky_and_ntl_ they stopped showing SunSet Beach cos it came to the end of its run in the states, then ITV2 picked it up for repeats but ( I think it was ) NBC want to bury it, and asked a very high price for re run rights, which made it to expensive to show.

as to Family Affairs/Hollyoaks ratings I dont know what they are now, would need to see a web ratings report to say.

I agree!!!

They should keep the actor as he is very pleasing to the eye, but he definitely shouldn't be with either of the women after the way he has treated them.
