If I am not mistaken Ubuntu is a linux based system, this can be downloaded from ubuntu.com, this can be installed to a pc or booted from the cd which is made when you burn the iso to a disk.
Can you not boot your pc using the disk and format a harddrive as need, then reboot in to windows, that way no perminent changes are make to you pc.
Ubuntu can also be dual booted

This is what was suggested way back in post#2, the links provided there give instructions for the command line instructions for formatting under Linux. Slax is a Live bootable CD that makes no changes to your PC.
