Do I have to use the BBC iPlayer application to watch BBC HD programs i've downloaded, or can I use an alternative media player like Splash Lite which has hardware acceleration?

You have to use the actual BBC player, since it's built on Adobe AIR and that's the only thing that can decode the DRM.
