Topfield 5800 - Format HDD
Last night, whilst watching a recording, the Toppy froze and went funny. It then showed the "." on the front, which normally means it needs to be turned off - I tried to turn it off, but it was still frozen, so I turned it off at the mains.
Turned it back on, but the HD doesn't seem to load up and instead of it verifying the files and folders as it normally does after it freezes, it comes up with "Warning: All data on HDD will be lost, proceed with format?"? I can't access any recordings, and it won't pause or record anything, so I'm wondering whether formatting the HD will actually achieve anything? The HD was pretty full before this happened (had about 2GB spare) so I take it I will lose all my recordings? |

If you do format, yes you'll lose everything.
Running with that little space isn't a good idea; but of more concern if you're seeing this problem is perhaps the power supply - there are details of how to check it at the Toppy forum. You may also want to use one of the PC tools to try repairing the disk, in case it's just a case of the FAT being messed up - you'll need to remove it from the Toppy to do that. |

Go to :
http://www.toppy.org.uk/downloads/info.php?tid=16 and download Topfhdrw I'd suggest going for a much larger drive too Topfhdrw will repair your drive and let you copy its contents across to the new drive |

Will, forgive me if I've been blind, but that link leads to a Toppy.org.uk Download link which leads to http://www.topfield.cc/index-e.html, where I cannot find that file... unless it's "Debugging TAP"

In follow up to my original post, I bought a new Western Digital 500 Gig hard drive (as the one mentioned before had bust and eventually just made clicking noises when the box was turned on) but it doesn't work with my Toppy's firmware (pre-May 2005). I read somewhere that hard drives over 240 Gig(?) cannot be used with Toppy firmware dating before May 2005, so is it possible to update the Toppy's firmware so that it can accept the new hard drive?
