Recording a program that has already started?
sammoj
19-11-2009
I have searched and read the manual but I am still a bit confused about this.

If I am watching a channel, say BBC HD 108, and decide to I want to record a program that has already started on BBC Two 102 what is the best way to do it?

The manual seems to suggest changing to 102 pressing record then changing back? Is this right or am I missing something? On Sky HD you could just find the program in the quick EPG Info view and press record, this doesnt seem to work on the Foxsat HDR+.

Any words of wisdom from the folks on this forum would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

John

You can't record the buffer contents on the hdr only from the live programme position

Thanks, but I am not actually bothered about the buffer.

What I am trying to understand is the best way to start the recording on the channel I am not watching from that point forward.

Pressing the red record button starts recording on the channel you are on pressing it farther times sets timed lengths right arrow button adds a few extra mins
Is that what you mean? or are you trying to record the buffer?

Hi John

I know what you mean as I to always think their should be an easier way than having to go to the channel. When you go to the guide and press the OK button it just switches to that channel without the ability to choose record. It would be nice to have a little screen appear when you press OK with options to record-view-watch- etc.

Maybe in the future hey!

Thanks... I had a feeling it was just as the manual said.. Not very friendly is it.

Oh well, at least I can now see what to do even if I don't like it.

Shame, otherwise the box is excellent and the latest upgrade has improved the responsiveness as well.

I guess the op as simply been spoiled by his Sky box. Simply pressing the up and down arrow allows you to move up and down the channels on the search and scan banner until you get to the channel you want, then simply press record or even move forward to the next programmes if required by pressing the side arrow keys

It does seem strange that a FS box can't handle it the same way

Yes, this is my main bugbear with the Humax. Sky+ is way superior in this respect. Other than that I'm happy with my Humax.

Actually even my old Topfield 5810 could do that, in many ways it was a superior box to the Humax. But alas the freeview signal here is not brilliant and I got irritated by the break up on the picture and recordings. So switched to Sky HD and then got irritated a year later by their appalling customer service and billing issues. So Freesat+ was the next attempt. It certainly has great picture quality, good recording functions, excellent USB extract to Mac capability but a few niggles in the interface.

I just don't understand why you can't just go to the programme in the guide and hit the enter button like you do for programme that has not started yet. I appreciate it could only record from this point forward but at least the interface would be consistent.

Oh well, nothing is perfect....alas not even my Tivo, but I still miss that little chap, was by far the best for functionality...

I strongly agree that the Tivo far surpasses all the other PVRs when it comes to user interfaces. It is a pity that they decided to stop supporting the UK market.

I wanted two tuners, HD and Freesat so I reluctantly changed to the Humax HDR. The picture quality is much better than the old analogue Tivo but the Tivo was so much easier to use.

I think that is why I was so disappointed when I first got the Humax. How is it that a machine from 8? years ago was so good and is still the model of excellence on the user interface front?

The Humax twin tuner helps dull the pain a lot though!

It's an annoying fact that I found this out after upgrading to this unit, and was hoping that it would be improved with this months latest software upgrade, unfortunatly not.
My Sharp 'Vestel' Freeview+ unit on selecting a started program in the EPG simply displays the same recording options box, Record, Record Series or Watch, which I find useful as I may stumble across a prog that I like and then wish to record the remaining of that prog and the series.
With this Humax, you have to search or jump forward daily to find the next schedule of that prog then select the series record.

An alternative way of recording programmes that have already started is to change to that channel, open the Schedule (page 35 in the Manual), select the unused entry, edit the finish time, and enter a start time in the near future.
