This. Since ive no memory on my laptop hard drive to download new music i have had to become more selective of what i am downloading, and am finding that i can live without a lot of current music that is coming out. There is still a lot of really good stuff being released in this day and age that doesnt fit in with current trends, but it doesnt take long to youtube it!

Sorry, pop music has never been "all about the music". Style has always mattered in pop. Elvis was an absolute heartthrob and very carefully styled. Similarly, the Beatles were given mop tops and put in smart suits by their manager. You also had The Shadows and The Dave Clark Five. Then, in the '70s, you had Glam Rock, where everyone had to look more and more outrageous and men started wearing makeup. None of that really had anything to do with music, it was all about style and the way they looked.

You could also check out Uncut magazine and a few others like Record Collector which don't pay much attention to the current pop scene.

LOL ok then, I'll let you off.

“Links links! I love listening to new stuff so get them posted!”

I was talking about the link you posted of a google video search for "The Streets (Mike Skinner)" and asking which one you of the videos you were referring to. I did mention rapper Giggs right at the end though. So...here goes...

Firstly the opening track to his Walk In The Park "mix-tape".

Intro (B.B.T.)

The track he did with Mike Skinner (featuring here in a horrendous jumper LOL). Giggs' lyrics thought-provoking on this one I feel.

“Fantastic - Ice T was and is a legend. I do hope you try to check out some of his other stuff if you are not famliar with it. You may have realised already but the back beat is sampled from Black Sabbaths "Black Sabbath" another classic - although maybe not to your tastes.”

I do like that. I know who Black Sabbath are, bit ashamed that I don't really know much of their music though.

Quote:
“That track is from OG:Original Gangster which is a superb album often often regarded as one of the defining albums of the genre. Funny, sad, angry and most of all full of emotion.

I'm the opposite. Have very little knowledge of the more modern stuff - but happy to check it out if you have some recommendations.”

I definitely will check out some more Ice-T and "older" Hip-Hop in general.

As far as modern Hip-Hop recommendations. I'll get back to you. Don't want to fill this one post with too many links.

I will post this track by Nas from his 2006 "Hip-Hop Is Dead" album. He basically name checks a lot of the "old school" rappers and asks; Where Are They Now?

Quote:
“I gave that a listen. Still wasn't convinced. I did realise about two thirds of the way through that I was more listening to the beat rather than the words, so started it again and concentrated on what he was saying. I suppose I can see why you might like it. He has a pretty engaging rhythm to the lyrics but I just think it is poorly executed.

I'll persevere and check some of his other tracks.”

Ok, that's cool.

Quote:
“Do you like other genres too - if you are looking for some suggestions of other stuff to listen to I can provide some of my all time favourites - although I like many varied styles so you might hate a lot of them.”

I do really like all different kinds of stuff. Rock, Metal, Indie, Folk, Dance/Electronica, Hip-hop, R'n'B, Reggae/Reggae Dancehall, Pop and so much more. I don't often like to list my tastes my genre because I feel it doesn't often do just to how varied they are. I'm actually the sort of person who will listen to something and not really know what genre it is.

I'm of the "if I like something I like it, doesn't matter what genre it is" mould. So by all means try anything out on me.

Having said all that one genre I am really interested in at the moment is Dubstep. I don't know if your familiar with it at all. It's probably a bit of an "acquired taste" for some.

Don't knock him - as he mentioned he is only 19.Good on him for realising that the music 'that is so coldly charted' - quote Rush - Spirit of the Radio is the music that gets to the top of the tree.I'm sure after a little bit more digging he will come across the music he is looking for.
He is right in one way - there is alot of very bad music out there at the moment due to the major labels only concern in making profit & almost having a disregard for their own longevity by making sure they nature talent - & not treating them as a way of boosting their balance sheets.
There has always been bad music but the big labels output could get even worse I believe. There is loads of good music out there, however - it's a pity that people haven't got the time or perhaps the knowledge to find it (or just to lazy).

I have over 30 albums/singles of artists from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and the dreadful 90s.

The songs i hear on the radio are absolutely crap and sound shite, artists no longer have the "VOICE" but just have the image.

Every decade produces a few good artists and bands but the noughties have produced the WORST of the WORST.

Digital music has played a huge part in this.

and before YOU strike me down, i suggest you take a listen to Sgt Pepper by the Beatles in mono or Back In Black by ACDC or Led Zeppelin IV or A Night In The Opera and then to ANY album thats been in the top 10 0in the last 9 years and take out a worldwide poll, i garuntee the albums ive said will win by a mile.

heck, Summer Wine by Nancy Sinatra against Britney Spear - hit me baby one more time

All artists have a signature song that represent their fame.

Frank Sinatra - My Way
Robbie Williams - Angels - the only comparison thats levelled

chipmunk / tinchy stryder / dizzee rascal or ANY rap / grime / urban artist vs Run DMC. LOL.

i rest my case.

the only people who'd disagree are the people who've notlistened PROPERLY to the music of the 60s to the 80s.”

In your opinion. I have lots of music which I love - Jill Scott, Angie Stone, Lauryn Hill, Faith Evans, MJB...I could go on and on. If you are listening to Capital Radio and other commercian stations then you wont here anything new or different. Also depends what rap/hip hop you listen to because again there are some good artists out there.
