I wasn't keen on the Charleston until I saw Melissa perform it on DWTS and her routine ended up being one of my favourites of the season!

Not sure whether it will suit any of our celebs though.

I'm not keen on the thought of the Charleston. Perhaps I've seen too many black & white jerky films of it?
I'm more Fred & Ginger really.

Thank you! I never thought of Googling it. I am still sad about Jade.

And it wasn't what came to my mind first either

Does shag mean something different in the US?
I think it does, I remember when the film Shag came out in the late 1980s, a group of us got hold of a copy, never have half a dozen 14 year old girls been so disappointed

What is there not to love about the Charleston? It's fun, energetic, and is normally to wonderful music.

Oh how I love ragtime, and 20s jazz.

I hate the Charlston with a passion too. I'm not a great fan of silliness through the medium of making stupid faces and the Charlston seems to involve lots of silly faces. Nothing against it technically, it's just the style that grates on me.

Rock n' roll should be great though! Wonder if they're letting them do lifts?!
You'll not be a Team Cola fan, then

I absolutely adore the Charleston - along with the Quickstep, it;s the one dance I would love to have a go/be good at!!!

Cannot wait to see it being attempted.

Not exactly sure about the "Rock and Roll" one though!!

It's an unbearable, nauseating, irritating, nightmare of a dance.

I expect next week to feature some of the most vomit-inducing "performances" ever seen.

Why did they have to bring it to SCD?

(And the other new dance is little different from a jive.)
Aww Veri.

I love the Charlston - its peppy and vimmy and happy and nauseatingly brilliant!!!!

Agree with you re Rock and roll though - what's that all about? I thought they were going to introduce the Bolero after last week's professional dance, or at the very least a Swing as opposed to Rock and Roll. Maybe someone who knows the professional difference can enlighten me.

I can see why they are including the rock and roll, In fact most of the pros will have done rock and roll exams, as it is part if the exam system, of rossetes (ballroom, latin, old time , rock and roll and discos) Most children learning will be learning the above dances, My son (6) is working on his disc exam at the mo, but has done all the above in the past. At disco competions, they do rock and roll partner dances, and having seen them learn it, it is a similar start to Jive and I think thats why they learn it at a young age. Just my opinon.

I would love to see some of the old time dances done, these are my sons favorites like the gainsbrough glide. (they would be great for a xmas special as they have moves that look like skating in them)

Rock n roll was one of the first dances my daughter did at her dance classes(after cha cha and samba) currently they are doing a swing class there too so I agree and I can see why its been included.Haven't seen them do old time ones there but they do bring in different ones during holidays when its ony the die hard regulars attending to give them a bit of fun ( although most of them scream at the teachers to stop teaching them salsa as they hate it!)

Still not keen on the idea of the Charleston being on SCD

If the new dances are anything like as much fun as Darren and Lilia's routine tonight, then I'm looking forward to them - although they might be a bit fast and furious for some of the celebs to handle.
Hmmm. I was ... bored by Darren and Lilia's routine. I kept thinking I'd seen lots of better dancers from celebs and their partners.

Anyway, time to look at some of the Charleston clip-links that have been posted.

I'm not looking forward to this weeks show. No Jade and these 2 awful, tacky dances. People throwing themselves about, gurning. Just awful. They could have at least had one graceful, beautiful dance for those of us that like a bit of class

I'm just remembering gem and gemma's charleston from 'strictly dance fever' and that was FAB-U-LOUS
Thanks for the links, but they just remind me of what I hate about this dance, and, I'm sorry Dolly, but I absolutely loathed Cem and Gemma's.

In the Charleston, there's far too much scope for ham acting, and posing, nauseatingly exaggerated motions, positions that make me feel ill, and don't even get me started on that criss-crossing hands-on-knees thing.

Just look at how much of Melissa's was just acting, open-mouthed and all. (And I normally like Melissa J H a lot.)

/|\

Could look a bit silly though if SCD under do the make up and outfits or get the music wrong.........

Presume this is what they will want, where the idea came from and what Bruno and Len will be expecting.

It also addresses completely what Ricky W and Ali neeed to show.
The need to show that they can look like open-mouthed over-acting idiots in distorted motion?

Perhaps, this year, they do.

Except that Ricky W isn't doing the Charleston.

I'm sure that Brian's take on the Charleston will make Ali look miiighdee fiiine.

Just watched Cem and Gemma's, and that really is lots of fun.

Mark and Melissa's made me feel ill, though. Hmm.
