BuddyBontheNet: Sorry, I didn't get that joke because I've never seen the whole of Strictly Ballroom (just the bit at the end on YouTube).

I'll get me coat....

I think dancing should be fun, both for those who participate, and for the remainder of us who watch from our sofas. I'm looking foward to this week, the Charleston from the Roaring 20's and Rock n' Roll from the 50's..great fun.
I would really like to see an exhibition of "acrobatic" Rock n' Roll, maybe from the world champions, they come up with some remarkable moves..and no, I'm not suggesting they introduce that as part of the competition. ”

I love Minuets, and Gavottes. I love the music of Mr Playford too.

I did some Ancient dance lessons a few years ago, they were very precise and great fun - even better they are not some sort of athletics contest, anyone can learn them. What about the 16th century Volta or a Pavan, Galliard anyone?

Has anyone said the Charleston is less viable as a dance discipline? (I'm just a bit puzzled as to why you're addressing that in particular.)

I don't think it's a question of validity in any case, and though the Charleston may be great fun to dance, I find it far from great fun to watch.

(I could do without the polka, but a minuet or the ancient dances SliverOfDiamond mentioned might be interesting.)

Ever since we first saw the film (and I've seen it many times), that phrase has been one of my husband's favourites! Usually he uses it when he is talking to the real Buddy (the dog!)

You are missing a treat! Try and catch it some times as it is such a sweet story and very funny in parts! Might have to watch it again now!

No, I was wrong there. I (probably wrongly) assumed that there was a tinge of "dance snobbery" going on in the thread..a sort of "it's just not cricket" about some of the posts. If it's purely a matter of personal taste, that's fine.

I think there was some snobbery-related banter about folk dances a ways back, but I didn't think the Charleston was being considered folk. Though I could be wrong, 'cause I can't quite work out how folk dances came up

BTW, I've noticed no one has tried to defend the criss-cross hand-on-knees thing that seems to crop only in the Charleston.

Is that because

No one's really noticed it?
Everyone (but me) loves it?
Nobody (including me) can stand it, and so pro-Charleston posts thought it better left unmentioned.
I love the thought of a dance other than the usual ones we get every week, and I'm really looking forward to this week. Love the charleston, love rock'n'roll, should be a lively programme. Just wish Brendan was still in the competition.

I... have no opinion of it. I'm not a big fan of the over-choreographed Charlestons that I think we're going to get, but I wouldn't cry if it were included in a subtler one as a one-off element...

It's the crissy crossy hand things, the acrobatics and the face pulling that I dislike. It just looks stupid.

Possibly the third? I certainly dislike it, as its either the same or very similar to a move I saw PJ and bl**dy Duncan do it in one of their crap music videos. From then on it was always 'that PJ and Duncan move where they looked ridiculous'.

I've always reckoned that the Charleston is an ungainly, ugly dance. Rock'n'Roll done well is a great high-energy dance with plenty of bounce and fun (you don't have to do the high lifts!). With the right music (rockabilly style with a strong bass line) I defy anyone to sit through without tapping their feet... Having seen the training so far I may just change my mind on Saturday night..........

Rock'n'Roll will never die, I'll dig it to the end....it'll go down in history just you wait my friend... (ShaNaNa lyric)

I agree, its the stupidest dance ever invented, looking at the ITT training. I think for the first time since it started I will give this SCD a miss. Also Ali, Laila have missed 3 days training and its tough having to learn one dance alloted to them, so how are they going to perfect two dances in 2 days. Plus if Ricky takes part how can he fully concentrate after all he's been through.

So far, the Charleston is living up -- or should I say down -- to my expectations.

Absolutely nauseating and a licence to "act" rather than dance.

I haven't read the rest of the thread cos I'm too busy enjoying the dancing tonight. I'm lovin' it, I can't stand the normal nights with the boring ballroom stuff. This is fun and at least you can see when they've made a mistake.

Fun to perform does not = fun to watch.

But I have to admit that the Charlestons were better than the Rock 'n' Rolls tonight. Both the R 'n' Rs were bland and slow.

It was fun to watch imo, and the best night of SCD to date.

Putting the Charleston in the show was one of the few things the producers got right for a while.

It's also given Chris and Ola the dance they needed to win- and now they surely will.

Fun for you, not fun for me.

Chris and Ola's Charleston only barely qualified as a dance.

Most of it was gurning, rubbish acrobatics, and gap-mouthed over-acting.

But, yes, the Charleston was a perfect gift to viewers who don't like dance and are looking for a John Sergeant or Coleen Nolan they can use.
