In-ear monitors - were clearly causing him to sing flat, as he was fine once he removed them.

I don't see why they can't wear ear monitors if it will help them. JLS did last year.

It's called a monitor - it's supposed to allow you to hear the backing mixed with your own voice so that you can get notes rights and on time, because the sound projected to the audience isn't very clear on stage.
Sometimes though, it can get in the way if the monitor levels are wrong.

I guess he had the monitors in because of his out of tune warbling in previous weeks. Perhaps his bad singing was due to him not being able to hear the backing track.

They give him a monitor for help (which is what all of them should have just like most artists who sing in a live setting) and he still can't sing in tune. He is average as best and Simon has never been so wrong about a contestant before. Even Cheryl is cottoning onto the fact that he isnt a good vocalist.

I am disappointed in Dannii for not mentioning what she must be thinking. She KNOWS how out of tune he is.

of course they do. You cannot sing live on stage with out monitors. Maybe the others use stage monitors rather than in ear - but they use them nonetheless

It hindered rather than helped after the big note? Therefore take it out?

The monitor is to help him hear when the music starts and so he can come in at the right time.

When on stage it's hard to hear the start of the music while the audience is applauding and cheering. He pulled it out once he was in sync.

Because I have eyes.

Only Danyl wore an EAR monitor this week.

Most of them use them in every performance, they're very common.

EAR monitors are not very common on the X factor.

its strange that they don't really, with all that noise from the backing track/audience to contend with

What? They're meant to help you sing in tune not cause it. If he was 'flat' with them in then there's no excuse is there?

And i replied to your comment which replied to a comment about "monitors"

Probably because it wasn't working. His first few notes were flat but he found the key once he fiddled with it/ditched it.

It's happened a few times on AI. They ditch them if they're not working.
