Also, the show is the same length whether it is two couples or three so when there are only two couples there, they are required to dance more dances with the result that the quality may not be as high. The dance marathons I saw from Mark/Matt and Alesha/Matt di were not tremendously thrilling. Having a third couple there would have altered the balance.
The show is broken up by a voting result which, while it may be a foregone conclusion, brings some variety.
There are three showdances to enjoy (or cringe at).
Although last year's final was a three couple one, it was a little different to how such a final would be expected to run because of the previous week's fiasco. We already knew that Tom was out in front and, although we could have guessed that anyway, it did detract from the show somewhat. I still thought it was better as a spectacle than a two couple one would have been though.
