"Stops at the quarter-finals" is even more ambiguous. I would suggest the emphasis is on the word STOPS rather than the word QUARTER-FINALS, i.e. the point of the communication is the finality of the word STOPS rather than the timing of stopping, before or after a point in time. The emphasis is not about what is ongoing before or after. Therefore the unspoken initimation is that at the appointed time said activity is not ongoing, i.e. stopped. Not when it stopped, mainly overwhelming nuance that at the time quietly mentioned the condition heavily emphasised is STOP, not go (for the last time).

Yes, STOP in the sense of not happening at all,
not in the sense of happening for the last time.

I would say midflight would make a conscientious solicitor. Heelleader would make a good barrister (please can I have a dance? ). No I am not the judge, that job has already been taken, at £7,000 a night. ”

And thanks for the welcome Starpuss, SheShe and Tissy.

Oh man, I work at home freelance and I've resisted this for soooo long. You people are too warm and fuzzy and SCD is just too interesting. I might have to disable my internet connection if I'm ever going to get any more work done.”

You might like to brush up on your darning, too. ”

Another Self-employed fan here, also getting no work done.
Have sent Mr dlc out to the woods to collect firewood to heat house and cook on since we no longer can afford gas or elctricity, because of my reduced income.
(Note- I have a solar powered internet connection and my laptop is connectedto a stationary bicycle)

If the injured party finishes up in the bottom two, then the other uninjured couple should still dance. The injured couple will not get off their chairs and so will be evicted by the judges for non-performance, just like a boxer failing to answer the bell.

The bye as it now stands is a total exemption in the gift of the BBC disenfranchising the judges and the electorate. I suggest that in all such situations the judges should continue to mark (zero) and the public should continue to vote. This is a marking and voting competition.”

An interesting point, but it has its flaws. If this method had occurred with Jade on her tango week, then lots of the public may have voted to keep her in the competition, only for her then to withdraw the following week (as per the rules of only having one week off). Would the BBC have to refund all the people who voted for her? It's tricky.

With the "bye week" system, we avoid that situation. People voted for Jade the week prior to her injury, and she was still technically in the competition for the following week until she withdrew. We also get to see her tango in the final.

If the BBC had made us vote for Jade to keep her in the competition even though we hadn't seen her tango, and couldn't be sure whether she'd have to withdraw the following week anyway, many voters would have been unhappy.

Welcome from me too heelleader - another 'self employed supposed to be working but can't keep off this' member!

I loved your first post!

I like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt at first and I gave a long leash to Bhoy when he first appeared. Then I found out he'd been permanently banned from here on a previous ID and really was a Wind Up Merchant (WUM). At that point the fun of having Bhoy around went out of it for me. and I stopped responding to his posts.

Unfortunately there are plenty of other people also willing to indulge him around.

To all others; haven't you twigged yet that these people thrive on you rising to their bait?

If you want Bhoy to stop doing this kind of thing, don't read any thread he starts and don't respond to any comment he makes on other threads. Simple as that.

When you're left isolated in cyberspace, no-one can hear you scream.

Call it a Bhoycott, perhaps.”

Love it!

I'm just dyeing towels in the washing machine to give them a new lease of life - I guess I should be glad I've got a washing machine and electricity!

A Bhoycott - I love it.

I still don't understand how everyone else knows his previous ID apart from the mods.

And welcome heelleader, loved your first post (and the rest of them!).

We endured weeks of it on the Big Brother forum - and his "style" is conspicuous.

I am however opposed to anybody getting an unconditional bye. Matt di Angelo performed 2 meltdown dances but was voted through. Laila performed a non-dance but was voted through. Some unkind person might say Craig Kelly made a profession of non-dances after which he was voted through. This is in the gift of the electorate with well-established precedents. The rules provide for it, half on judges marks, half on phone votes.

To be consistent and even-handed, Kate, Letitia (dancing with a temperature of 100), Laila, Jade, Ali should all have been allowed a non-dance for one week, marked zero by judges but relying on and hoping for the public to vote them through (i.e. voted clear of the bottom 2) if the public so wish. It would be illogical doing it that way because the public would be being asked to vote for something they hadn't seen happen. They wouldn't be voting on potential as they wouldn't even know whether it was likely the person would be more able next week. It would be a simple popularity vote with added elements of tactical voting. The show isn't a simple popularity contest and it does need rules that mean it doesn't lose its best dancers for trying more and injuring themselves. The result would be either someone good going out because they had no support that week even if they would be alright next week , someone staying for doing nothing or someone else going because all the people voting for a popular sick candidate would distort the votes.

The logical response is the simple one - to give anyone with whats deemed by a Doctor to be a significant problem that makes dancing dangerous, impossible, too painful or impractical a week off. You might well extend that to deaths of close relatives as no one can fake that - though thats likely to need more than the one week off possible. Its perfectly fair as anyone could use the rule if they are the one afflicted and the QF cut out means its as unlikely as it can be that anyone any good will go instead.

Would Ali get an unfair advantage if she gets a week off when Laila had to dance on?

That was the question. All I wanted was everyones opinion.Yet now you all want to bhoycot this thread but you have taken 25 further posts since dinner to tell me this

You couldn't make this up.Why cant we get back to chatting about SCD.Thats all I want to chat about

and on that note it looks like you are all happy with the current rules and I am in the minority so I guess I will just have to accept that you are all happy with this bye rule

Consider me closed on this thread (Of course thats as long as know one comes on here again and questions my integrity)

Yet again I fail to get a straight answer from the OP to my arguments or questions. I officially give up and assume I'm in the right again. Marvellous.

I'll keep my future posts in threads that deserve the effort.

If the doctor says she cannot dance then yes she should get a pass to the week after just like jade did. If the doctor says she is ok to dance and chooses not to then she will be out. those are the rules. I have no idea why people find that so difficult to understand.

If the public want to vote how they like, that is their money and their privilege.

The public voted for the Matt di Angelo dance which did not finish, they voted for the Laila dance which never truly started (Craig's mark of 3 was the most honest, Bruno talked tough but chickened out with a 6).

The public vote for past performances and personal favourites -- who doesn't? They vote for non-performance and withhold votes despite good performance.

What has dancing got to do with it?

When was the last time Strictly was logical?

I think most people manage to understand it. A couple of weeks on and it doesn't seem to have penetrated Bhoy's skull yet.
