Giving the beginners marks for showing up etc. is not silly - it is how he can provide encouragement to those who are struggling and nervous at the start. He can then expect them to develop more skills and so earn more marks.”

To be honest I have no particular problem with how any of the judges put together their marking criteria as long as whatever criteria they use is consitent and fair to all couples.”

I'm with both of you on this one.

I still think Len is too generous but at least there's a bit of rhyme and reason to his scoring now.

I thought he explained himself well.

This explains the truth...

Len, Alesha, Bruno: Unaware it exists

2
Craig: Exceptionally bad, but managed to keep standing throughout the performance
Len, Alesha, Bruno: Burnt the paddles in a bonfire before the series started

3
Craig: Managed to hit a couple of timings correctly, and kept smiling
Len, Alesha, Bruno: Buried paddles underground, but unfortunately came across Bruce's crypt. They haven't been the same since.

4
Craig: The dance has a character akin to a dead dormouse, but at least it looked like a dance.
Len, Alesha, Bruno: Padded out Lilia's dresses with the offending paddles, unaware that'd it lead to 500 threads on Digital Spy asking whether it meant she was fat.

5
Craig: Average. Not great, but ok
Len: Inexplicably awful - but at least they tried
Alesha: Could do better, but what an ugly couple
Bruno: Wanted to be swept away on a crest of a wave...but got Ryanair instead

6
Craig: Slightly better than average
Len: Not very good, but the celebrity's popular
Alesha: Could do better, but what a cute couple
Bruno: Expects more cheesy grins, but the dancing was alright

7
Craig: Reasonable effort
Len: Standard mark. He goes up and down from a 7 (I know how that sounds )
Alesha: Could do better, but I fancy the male
Bruno: Got the cheesy grins, but the dancing's iffy

8
Craig: Very good
Len: A magnificent dance...but you're not one his favourites
Alesha: Wow wow wow wow - wait, can't give too high this early
Bruno: YES YES YES YES - can't criticise it but would be slaughtered if I give a 9 or 10

9
Craig: Excellent
Len: Magnificent dance plus he the celeb
Alesha: Could give a 10. Should give a 10. Haven't got the guts to give a 10
Bruno: Marvellous - everyone else'll like it so he can mark high. Watch out for a potentially dangerous arm flailing aout before this mark is given

10
Craig: Perfection unless your name is Lisa Snowdon. Then meh will do
Len: Magnificent dance and a cheeky chappy's involved
Alesha: Good dance from someone she fancies
Bruno: Who cares about the technique, as long as the performance is there?”

Len has taken exams to be a teacher and is a member of a professional body. As far as judging is concerned, anyone who taken a professional exam can be a judge.

Having said that, none of the other judges have taken any sort of ballroom/latin exams and therefore are not qualified, they don't even know the correct footwork required and are learning the job as they go along!

Because judging is subjective, it is open to personal likes and dislikes, whether that be of the dancing, the personality or the like or dislike of the persons dancing, the nationality and many other factors. This is because at the end of the day, people who judge others are only human.

Unfortunately, dancing is not like like a race, where first past the post is the winner:-\

I said before the article starts in response to the question 'how do you get a ten from Len' was 'catch him in a good mood'. I lost a serious amount of respect for him in series five when he gave Gethin's waltz a 10 when he admitted he saw mistakes in it but he was in a good mood and yet nitpicked Alesha's in the final and only gave her a 9.

He also gave Rachel a 10 for a slighly under-performed AT because he'd given Lisa one for an imperfect AT - he admitted this.

It doesn't surprise me that you get a 4 just for getting through a routine no matter how bad it is. Hubbie said he'd have been more interested in Craig's scale of marking and I have to admit so would I.

Len also I think marks blokely blokes and people he likes highly than those who aren't his cup of tea.

The scale purposed by Fudd is probably pretty accurate.
