Coronation Street's leading producer Kim Crowther is to step down from her position after two-and-a-half years.

She will be replaced by former Doctor Who series producer Phil Collinson in the second half of next year, just a few months before the show's 50th anniversary celebrations.

thank god sounds like she was given the push to me so despite what some on here say even the itv bosses must've thought it had been crap under her.

YES! YES! YES!

I am so ****ing ecstatic right now.

Bye bye Kim, don't let the door hit you on the way out - finally let a professional take over the reigns and sort Corrie out once and for all.

Saying that, it can't get much worse than it is now

Is it really worthy of a breaking news banner?

The new guy is fab though. He has done great things on Doctor Who. I am really excited I think he's going to bring some of the 2004 feel of the show back.

Great. That's the two top soaps getting the kick up the ass they both needed.

Interesting bit from his wikipedia page.

While he was an actor, the role of Alexander in the 1999 Channel 4 drama Queer as Folk was written especially for him by his friend Russell T Davies. However, after Antony Cotton auditioned for the production team, Davies and his fellow producers felt they had no choice but to offer the role to him.

This is potentially good news. Kim Crowther's been in the job long enough to make an impression on the show and, overall, all she's managed to do is make things worse than they were before.

Phil Collinson may or may not prove to be the right person to improve things on the show but we'll have to wait and see just what impact he does make.

Obviously the potential is there for him to improve things but, just as equally, he could well leave things in a similar sort of state or actually make things worse than they are now.

Ooh, maybe he will sack Cotton out of bitter spite? Fingers crossed!

Perhaps! But I don't think things can get much worse now and we seem to have had a succession of bad producers that it must be time for Corrie's luck to change!

Brilliant news for Coronation Street.

Under Kym Crowther reign it had been completely dire.

The second half of 2010 could actually be watchable.

I have it on pretty good authority that Crowther was not originally planning to leave until after the 50th anniversary ... so it would appear that someone above her has reviewed her performance and altered her plans.

But do not expect her to disappear: her long-term ally Kieran Roberts may well find work for her either on another ITV show or at ITV HQ ...

He's hardly likely to turn the programme into Doctor Who. Just like Bryan Kirkwood won't turn EastEnders into Hollyoaks despite some people's fears. People are excited about this guy because he's been good on the shows he has worked on. He really gets into what they're about and works hard. Anybody who has seen Dr. Who confidential will tell you this.

NOOOO.

Corrie has been so good under her. Urg.

She kept all the characters in fair screen time. I hope it doesn't become center to 3 characters a week and Janice, Lloyd, Dev, Claire, Ashley, Emily, Betty and the likes never get used like before.

Crowther made use of everyone!

Thank God for That!

Hopefully Corrie will now have a producer who can actually do a decent job, it deserves it.
