Top Gear in HD no thumbnails
germanycalling
27-11-2009
Caught up with the first Top Gear in HD last evening. this is the one that had no series link active. It was recorded as a single event. There were no thumbnail images present when the event was opened. The black images were there just like a programme viewed before housekeeping. No big deal but I'm curious as to why. The second programme is also present as a single event although I thought I had requested a series, but it was doen in haste. The thumbnails are present for that one.

I'm sure if Snoods had replied there would have been a "" and not a "" He, he, he! I wonder why there were no thumbnails though? At first I thought I was on my external drive where nothing has thumbnails, but I definitely was on HDD. How odd!

Thumbnails only get generated if the box is in standby mode and not recording at 03:00 otherwise no thumbnails from previous days are created.

Or of course another new bug...

I blame the BBC and their recent kerfuffle with the crids

though seriously when I eventually made the HD series linked reservation for TG, as I recall the option wasn't immediately available, the recording executed and the file was placed on the root of the hdr drive and not in a folder, also I had a series linked Ray Mears schedule and one recording created a completely new folder. Just wondering if this may have been connected.

PS can't say for sure but I seem to recall the first TG didn't have thumbnails on my box

Yes but surely they would have got picked up on subsequent nights. There's been a few since 15th November

I can also confirm that Thumbnail Images are not present.
I have been recording daily Veronica Mars on E4.
Thur 26/11/09 recording shows the Thumbnails, but todays recording Friday 27/11/09 do not.
I put the unit into full standby and rebooted but still no images, so Automans reply about no images until after the 3am autoupdate cycle seems to be correct.
As the chapters by time are there and still functional it's one of those little annoying bugs that need addressing.

it's not a bug.. todays recording of VM won't have thumbnails until after 3 am tonight, and as long as the box is in standby during the housekeeping period.

I understand that, surely images can be generated instantly from the physical recording, why wait until the following day just to see thumbnail images? In my opinion a bug.

A bug is something that does not work according to the original specification. The designers obviously designed this box to create thumbnails in the overnight housekeeping period. It does that, it's not a bug.

Resampling a 1920 x 1080 image down to a few pixels is not an instant process it requires a fair degree of processing power.

If you have a decent image editor like photoshop try it it takes a few second.

I'm pretty sure I've never seen thumbnails, only black images.I was thinking about this last week.

To make thumbnails the unit needs the video output stages and the box only has one of those which is need to display the main video output.

Thus our current hardware can only create them when the video output stages are not in use.

Granted, if the unit was in standby it could indeed create the images at the end of every recording made when in that state.

However that may stretch the skills of the Humax programmers

If you look at a recording the day after it was made and the hdr was in sby overnight you should have chapter thumbnails when you press OK on the recording in media list. If not somethings wrong

This still begs the question why no thumbnails? Is it because of the CRID cock-up that the HDR does not recognise that the recording is there or because there is some sort of corruption in the id data? There must be some sort of interaction required between the HDR and the file as none of my archive on an external drive have thumbnails.

Was TG repeated later? Would this explain why some of us have no thumbnails and others do, ie the problem was sorted on repeat? Bit of a conundrum

Re the first question, unlikely that CRID data has any relevance, it is only used for scheduling purposes.

Re the second sentence, if you put the external files back on your HDR, they will (or should) get thumbnails back after going through the housekeeping process.

Not sure why a few people are getting this problem, I think I saw it once, on one file, a long time ago, and wasn't bothered enough to investigate.

By turn off do you mean turn it to low power sby or switch off at the mains. If the latter you won't get thumbnails. Why turn it off completely it only uses about 0.75W in sby.

Yep, it will only do the housekeeping routines at 0300 if the box is powered on in either of the standby modes.

I don't have anything other than freezer and fridge switched on at the mains over night....We had a problem a long time ago and I take no chances now.
