Chris and Ola are my favourites and have been from early on, but I will happily acknowledge that this is based on sheer entertainment value, their wonderful partnership and the pure joy and exuberance they bring to the floor - NOT his dancing skills.
Whilst Ali, Ricky, Jade and Zoe are (were) all much better technically - none of them do anything for me at all. Donny Osmond just won DWTS whilst being far insuperior to the excellent Mya in terms of ability and natural skill.
If Chris wins, I think it'll be akin to a Darren Gough win (again who I supported) however I do think Darren had improved significantly compared to Chris.
I would love Chris and Ola to hold that trophy aloft at Christmas but would happily admit that they won't have won it on dancing merit - but if they do - does it matter ?
On a last note: James Jordan famously protested last year when Cherie and he were voted out - Please guys vote on the dancing. I notice he is being especialy quiet this year - too busy shifting Chris's boxes about methinks!!!

In a way its far worse. Donny is a showman and can act and at times hit a high standard and had a decent record. You can also explain his win in terms of an older audience voting for someone they knew.
Chris would be a strange winner. His record is weaker, his highs lower, his journey short and circular. He hasn't got as near to the best dancers as Tom did. His acting is terrible. Nat had more journey and acted better. He doesn't fit the conventional macho male winner model - though weaker people with under-dog tags do win reality shows. He hasn't changed much or overcome problems en route - Ali has become more outgoing at last and dealt with two injuries. He's likeable, but then so are Ali and Brian except to females who don't vote for females who look or sound like Ali. He's trying, but others tried at least as hard. Ola is wonderful, but she always has been. He has a great relationship with Ola - but its pretty absurd to claim its better than the Ali-Brian one or the rumoured Ricky Nathalie one. He has the little boy lost look and tries his best - but being shy is used to argue against Ali and wanting to do well and win is used against Nathalie and Ricky. If he wins its going to be a good BBC producer who finds any spin to explain why - apart from saying people liked him.
The problem is the show will then move on from having a winner who clearly wasn't best but was top 3 or 4 to having a winner who was probably top 6 only. If thats seen as the norm or happens again, why bother trying hard and doing well when the right VTs and turning up as the right sex will work better? Why not vote for Phil or Nat or Ricky G or Jo Wood to win - the most alpha male , the person with the best journey story, the funniest and the person who tried hardest? The more people see the show like that, the more it will become that and the fewer people who might do well will apply - until someone cancels it.
Can SCD survive - yes if they move on and get the casting and format better next year and sort out whether they should push the back stories so much for the weaker candidates. No more Blackpools. Lets also have a bit more care with labels -no more Tess claiming the people who do best are favourites or Alesha spotting a front runner when some people will misread that. One idea might be to push the Charleston week earlier to let the people who are dancing better show they can do comedy too and to make things more challenging for the weaker people so voters can see a difference. Another would be to make sure that the music fitted the dances and what they wanted people to try and be, rather than what they were comfortable with.
A lot of its been bad luck though - Ricky W looked too good at the start, all of his female opposition was injured and/or left even after they put 4 in. Its even suffered from love breaking out as the closest relationships have been downplayed on camera whilst the weakest have been shown having fun together. They ought to be able to do better next year - though how they respond to any Chris win to stop it happening again is going to be difficult.
