What I don't get is people thinking that Chris and Natalie can help the faces they wear when they are dancing! Surely it must be obvious that their facial expressions reflect their nervousness when they are dancing, and after the comments they have received from the judges, if they could do something about it they would have done so?
![]() The other thing I don't get is why people are talking about Chris' facial expressions during the Charleston, when it is blindly obvious that the facial expressions were part of the character he was playing in the dance? ![]() I can understand people being irritated by someone's facial expressions, but not talking about it as if something can definitely be done about it! Chris has tried several different faces so far and not pleased the judges - until last night! |

Another poster mentioned it on another thread and it hit home with me. All that mugging to camera is a turn off for me. He's like a mini Donny Osmond. Too smarmy and cheesy for me. He's a funny guy but its counterbalanced by all that look at me I'm such a cheeky chappy.

And the Nat Cassidy threads... and probably all the other dancers but Team Cola threads!
Personally, the gurning and LOOK AT ME! I'M A PERSONALITY antics crossed from sweet to smug and saccharine a few weeks back. Of the 4 remaining couples, Chris is the weakest dancer. He did a couple of good ballrooms, but his latin hasn't been all that. He lucked out getting the Charleston this week. Had it been rock'n'roll, he'd be gone! |

I found Chris entertaining in week 1 and 2 but then I soon got bored as its the same comedy routine each week. He's a very poor dancer and I;d never give him a vote. This is a DANCING competition and saying yeah baby 40000000 times shouldnt be enough to win the title.

Whether you like or not, Strictly has always had a reality element where people engage with the contestants' characters. The show is at its best when those contestants bring their personalities onto the dancefloor or show something about themselves through the dancing that we otherwise would never have seen: witness Alesha, Gethin, Mark, Austin, etc. ... It's not just about celebs robotically learning a dance routine and nothing else - much as the judges might like it to be sometimes. The reason Chris has excited so many people is that, with the exception of Natalie, this series has been lacking in characters. His partnership with Ola is fun, plus they can dance - granted, his technique could improve, but it's not like he's another Craig Kelly on the dancefloor. If you don't like this, fine. But let's not pretend Strictly is a different show to the one it's always been.

Agree with all your post but particularly the part I put in bold! I hate all old 'act your age' ethos! I resolutely refuse, I am currently trying to be an embarrassment to my kids and one day will endeavour be an embarrassment to my grandchildren!
![]() ![]() Back on topic, I agree with the rest of your post also - I'd rather see Chris and Ola genuinely enjoying themselves than the rest of the shark-eyed desperadoes who are still in the competition (I've already used that description in another thread but it went down so well I wanted a chance to repeat it - sad non-age-acting 55-year-old that I am )

Good on ya Lotty! I too am a constant embarrassment to my kids and intend to remain so. Funny how it's nearly always younger people who come out with this "Act your age" nonsense. I could retaliate with "Youth is wasted on the young" but far be it from me to stereotype!

![]() When dancers have facial expressions that reflect their nervousness, they look nervous. The judges haven't been very critical of Natalie's expression. Craig's comment last week may have been the first. So changing them probably hasn't been a high priority - especially since the expressions are a big part of how she "sells" the dance, which must make it hard for her to figure out what to do instead. People can do something about their facial expressions, just as they can do something about leading with the wrong part of the foot and other problems. But they might have to practice a different look, and so on, which probably hasn't been their highest priority.Quote:
But the expressions had nothing to do with the dance or Bugsy Malone. If its Bugsy Malone he looked like a small kid playing a small kid who couldn't play an adult - not a kid playing an adult .Ola looked like a girl who was in the speak easy for some fun and could handle herself - he looked like her much younger brother who wouldn't survive 2 minutes there. If he's from a silent comedy she's from a crime drama - they just don't go together however I perm it.
Imo, the Charleston is a licence for people to put on exaggerated open-mouthed faces, act more than dance, throw in acrobatics that would seem rubbish in other contexts, and so on. The dance doesn't have to be that way, but it opens the door for it, and so it's not surprising that someone from Strictly eagerly ran through. |

It amazes me that people only seem to remark about the facial expressions of celebrity contestants. Many of the professionals come up with some strange ones too.

Some people on here want to study some of the expressions in old film musicals...
I'd say even Gene Kelly's in Singin' in the Rain is suspect. But his and Chris's perfectly evoke the era. Some of his faces have driven me mad in previous dances, but on this he was bang on. |

Yes this is a DANCING competition and it is also a light ENTERTAINMENT programme where celebs are LEARNING to dance!Quote:

And who said he had to look like he was in Bugsy Malone? The music was just a suitable piece for the dance - I'm sure most people wouldn't have a clue that the music was from Bugsy Malone!Quote:
But they aren't nervous expressions. Indeed, they're the same expressions that help to get some people saying how enthusiastic they are and how well they sell the dance.

Do you speak for every person who has learned to dance in front of 8 million people or your own experience as a dancer?Quote:

I suppose people could say it's a new character of his own who just happens to express like that no matter how incongruous it seems.

FGS Give the guy a break and if people have to pick on something then why not make it something Chris can do something about?

Ok and apologies if someone has already said this, but I can't wade through the whole thread I really can't, it's too hard.
You lot have seen the faces that some of the pro's pull when dancing haven't you??! It can be perfectly executed at best and a look of excruciating constipation at worst. I'm not sure what the 'ideal' dance face is to be honest. |

Chris has two looks. 1. Constipated 2. Temper tantrum child
It'll be fun to see which he dons on Saturday. Probably No 1. |

Says who? Why are you right and I'm wrong?Quote:
Says who? Come on! Since when is a gap-mouth "I'm having a great time" look an expression of nervousness? Or Natalie's nose in the air like a spinster aunt sniffing a lemon (as someone put it, more or less)? Do you speak for every person who has learned to dance in front of 8 million people or your own experience as a dancer?
Quote:
Rubbish. The judges have remarked plenty of times about Natalie's expression and keeping her mouth open when she dances.
They haven't. Plenty of other people have pointed it out too, without anyone claiming they were wrong.Quote:
Exactly. He has so many things to get right first time and as I said before, has tried various facial expressions which until Saturday night didn't please some of the judges.
Perhaps he should behave naturally rather than trying expressions.Quote:
No, it doesn't have to be that way, especially if you are just dancing socially, but on SCD each couple are competing to make their routine stand out and I thought Chris and Ola both did a great job. He could do something about his facial expressions. Besides, others are criticised for theirs. Why should Chris be different?
FGS Give the guy a break and if people have to pick on something then why not make it something Chris can do something about?

Goodness, people seem to be really worried about Chris, the things they are criticising him for! Must be feeling really threatened.

I don't know whay I can't warm to him. I like Ola a lot btw, but Chris just seems a little fake to me. Not weird or little or any of the other horrible things on here, just a little on the 'its all put on for show' side. I can't really explain it its just a feeling I get. Probably just me, we all like different personalities on here after all, and noone is perfect.
