Digital Theatre Sound is a 6 channel audio system similar to Dolby Digital 5.1. It is less compressed than DD and provides better sound expecially bass.

The reason that you can't hear it (presuming you have a disc with a DTS soundtrack) is that you also need a DTS compatible receiver as many players will not be able to decode the signal. The DTS logo on your player probably means that your player is capable of passing a DTS stream to a receiver. Those players that can decode would still need to be plugged into a 6 channel amp for you to benefit.

Correct, having a DTS compatible DVD player simply means that the DVD player is capable of outputting the DTS stream to the AV amp. If you only have a DD amp, then set the audio option on the DVD menu for the disk in question to DD instead of DTS. If the disk only has a DTS soundtrack then you may have to just listen to the audio using the television audio instead.

DTS is indeed a 5.1 soundtrack but the with less compression than DD. This is particularly noticeable in the rear surround speakers.

Presuming that both pieces of equipment are capable of either passing though or decoding a DTS signal then you should have no problem.

Since you still seem not to ba able to hear the DTS sound tracks you could try the following:

1) Check that the digital out (from your dvd player) is set to "bitstream" and not "pcm". You should find this option in the sound submenu of your players setup menu.

(note: if it was set to pcm then you wouldn't have been hearing 5.1 from your system)

2) Check that you have your receiver set up correctly. i.e. do you have to flick a switch or something for DTS rather than it automatically selecting it itself.

3) You have actually connected the player to your receiver with a digital (optical or coax) lead. The digital signal is not passed via phonos.

It's worth making sure that what you say is 5.1 is actually 5.1. Get a disc that has a Dolby Digital with the 5 pings that travel around the speakers. It may be that you are not getting 5.1 at all.

I apolgise if any of the above sounds patronising, but most of the time you can't see the wood for the trees and it's something really simple that has been passed by.

Don't forget you can now get amps with DTS 6.1 ES which have an extra centre rear speaker.

You can also matrix old 5.1 material into 6.1 which pumps music out of the centre rear which was applied equally to both left & right rear (a bit like old dolby prologic).
