any guitarists on here?
Hi all,
I started playing guitar about 10 years ago, picked it up reasonably quickly but have lately not had much chance to play. Anyhow, being out of practice it takes a bit longer for me to 'loosen up' and get into the rythm, I was wondering, what techniques others use to warm up when they havent played in a fair whilst? ps, play electric, I have Gibson SG, Fender strat and Fender showmaster HSS, line6 POD2 and Fender deluxe 112+ amplifier

Scales, chord shapes then a bit of improvisation.

Scales. Picked alternately, as slow as you want, then work the speed up. One scale I enjoy is:
A C D C D E D E G E G A G A C A C D C D E D E G E G A G A C Up, then down again, all on the 5th, 7th and 8th frets, starting from A on the low E string. I start it as slow as I want then speed it up til it sounds great. |

I have a Gibson Les Paul Classic. It's very sexy indeed.

do 1st 2nd 3rd 4th fret with of course 1st 2nd 3rd 4th fingers on bass then across all strings .... slide it up a couple of frets n doit again and so on - real tedious - say for 4 or 5 minutes ... then edge into some boogie woogie .... or forget the first bit n just do the boogie ...

I could play Stairway to Heaven when I was only 18. Jimmy Page didn't write it until he was 21. I think that says a lot.

Use a metronome/drum machine. Start off very slowly and very gradually increase the tempo. When I say gradually increase the tempo, I don't mean going from 70bpm to 150bpm in the space of 10 minutes. stick with one tempo until you can play an exercise perfectly without mistakes, then increase by about 2bpm.
I wouldn't recommend going up by more than 5bpm a day. Seriously, it will really help your rhythm and timing. There are plenty of warm up licks and exercises out there. Just type 'guitar warm ups' (or similar) into google. Even if you don't play much lead stuff it's still good to warm up with a few exercises. |
