Why can't the BBC just ensure that with all series crid enabled events they place a programme crid in the meta data? It is after all this inconsistancy that has proved to be the stumbling block.

This is a little technical but I will outline some of the background that will perhaps help you understand how things work:
In series linking, if a event is signalled with a Series Content Reference Identifier (CRID) the box knows it should record that event and any other event with the same Series CRID. Because the same programme might be broadcast twice they may also broadcast a Programme CRID which identifies the programme individually (thus the recorder won't schedule something if it is already recorded or can look for alternatives in the case of conflicts). If the event has no programme CRID it is assumed to be unique and should be recorded no matter if there are other events with no programme CRID as well. If there are two event in the schedule at the same time which shares the same Series Content Reference Identifier (CRID) at the same time but at least one has no Programme CRID then the box will find a conflict that it cannot resolve. In the past we ignored events which had no programme CRID but the error of our ways was causing too many events to be missed. Now more events are being captured but when a broadcaster such as the BBC has multiple regions in the EPG then that will cause conflicts (in this case upto 6 conflicting events). I have had assurances from the BBC that they identified a bug in their metadata broadcasting system and had resolved it. I would ask that you please post anytime you identify such regional conflicts so that the BBC can have them highlighted to them. The recorder can only work with the quality of data that is supplied to it. I have a series link set but the HDR is failing to update its schedule to record the next epsiode.
